Just had the MOT with just the one advisory. Hurrah!
One of the brake discs is “slightly pitted” The receptionist is who handed over the keys and the the papers and said “passed easily” so I didn’t look fully until I got home.
What are pitted discs? Wear and tear? Corrosion?
Cheers!
hi craig,
it’s often caused by old age (i feel a bit pitted some mornings [:D]) you can have the disks skimmed but not unless really needed.
should not effect brake perfomance but if needed then mx5parts.co.uk often do a good deal for new set of 4 incl pads.
Sounds like a corrosion issue. Has the car been unused for a long time? With regular use the disks will wear down and the pitting should all but disappear.
No, it’s used about 3-4 times per week. So it’s not all the time, but it doesn’t go weeks without use either.
I’ll probably keep an eye on the brakes and leave it for now. I’m just a bit paranoid when it comes to the brakes, if there’s anything I want working perfectly on my car, it’s them.
if i’m ever worried i do the old fashioned test. 70 mph on a clear dual road & slam on the middle pedal. if it stops straight & quick its ok for a while.
but thats probably not the technically aproved method…[:D]
Pitted disks, one of those grey areas unfortunately “slightly pitted” is probably just what it says, but mot specs have been recently altered so that now disks that are to what would have failed a test on corrosion and also thickness will actualy pass, as it says on the ticket its only tested for the day its presented, not that its going to last twelve months, if in doubt peace of mind = new disks.
Regards
Geoff
