Polish on black plastic trim

i managed (unfortunately) to spread some polish off the bonnet onto the plastic scuttled trim at the base of the windscreen. This has left an unsightly grey line around some of this trim. Looks awful, I’ve tried my best to clean it off but no luck. Any suggestions? Some of the interior plastics also look a bit “lifeless” so maybe whatever gets suggested will work there as well?

Thanks in anticipation

Barrie

Don’t laugh until you’ve tried it, but…smooth peanut butter and a tooth brush!

Baby oil ??

Baby oil ??

Well, as they say, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it? Will have a bash over the weekend! Thanks

we don’t have a baby Geoff!  (Well they’ve all grown up is what I meant) I’ll see if wifey has anything suitable?

I use ‘back to black’ products whenever this happens to me. Always works a treat.

For inside I’d recommend a vinyl and rubber care (ie Autoglym).

Good Luck!

I’ve used this to good effect on black plastic in the past.

Goes a long way too, still using the same bottle I bought 8 years ago to use on the bumpers of a Citroen ZX I had at the time.

Thanks guys! All your responses are what I wanted. Inexpensive, easily obtainable products. The simoniz seller on eBay is a couple of miles from me, Motosave has the back to black, they are a 5 minute walk from my home. Asda has the peanut butter, 5 minutes drive away and the baby oil is in the bedside cabinet  I’ll get cracking and thanks again!

+1 on the Autoglym vinyl and rubber care.

Another shout for peanut butter, you can eat what’s left after you finish

If you don’t like the taste of peanut butter, use your wife’s toothbrush.

I’ve also used the “instant shine” type of black boot/shoe polish to good effect on black trim (the sort in a bottle with a foam applicator).
That stuff works on tyres, too.

A detailer mate of mine recommends ground nut oil…

This stuff is not cheap but really does work and works for ages…

Shop around for the best price. Its a very small bottle but will go a long way.  See http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=306307 for how good it is

Thanks guys for the continued advice and recommended products  I tried a few of the suggestions ( not spending any money ) and in this instance, so far, the boot polish suggested by Paul W has sorted the issue out! I had some under the sink and its coloured the trim really well? Obviously not sure of durability but looks good so far. I need to be more careful when polishing in that area in future!

Barrie, glad to be of help.

I’ve also used the stuff to dye a replacement support “string” for the rear parcel shelf of my old Suzuki Swift. I couldn’t find any black cord at the time, so I used white curtain cord and dyed it black. Next time I’d wear rubber gloves though… it took some getting off my fingers.
