Polishing car glass

I’m having some issues with the windscreen on my car. By the state of it, it looks like its the original and it has 10 years worth of minor stone chips, but the biggest problem is the whole windscreen seems to be covered in scratches that look like they’ve been etched into the glass by the windscreen wipers.

It may sound petty to some people but with the sun at the right angle it actually presents quite a large driving hazard and I’m really considering replacing the whole screen.

I’ve just spent the morning with a cleaning cloth, a buffing cloth and Autoglym’s fast glass, which has made it really shiny, but also confirmed my fears that the issues is with micro-scratches on the glass rather than the stubborn dirt I was hoping for.

Has anyone tried Autoglym’s glass polish on a windscreen? Any tips?

I do have cash on hand in case it all goes wrong and the windscreen gets junked, but I’m hoping for a ressurection.

Anyone know the life expectancy of a windscreen barring major damage?

Oh and if anyone’s interested, I was in Woking Halfords on Monday (yesterday) and they had a 3 for 2 on all cleaning products. Time to stock up.

Hi,

You can get glass polishes which will remove very minor scratches however you will never do it by hand. A rotary polisher is the best way. I have done this before with success on my 5. I still have deeper marks which i’ll just have to live with.

Might be worth getting in touch with a local detailer to see if they offer this service.

Hope this helps.

If it has a good few chips in as well as scratches a replacment is probably the most hassle free solution and making sure you keep your wiper blades in good condition to prevent any more damage!

this is what I’m thinking. It’s got nearly a dozen minor stone chips in it, some of those still have the offending pieces of debris embedded in the glass. I don’t mind going over it by hand to see if I can ressurect it but it’s going to be done on the first of my 4 days off coming up so I’ve got time to get someone round to have some new glass installed.

Paying someone to polish it up for me… sounds to me like throwing good money after bad. or at the very least polishing a turd…

I take it the 5 uses a fairly standard piece of glass that someone like autoglass should be able to sort for me.

Autoglass did mine via my insurance, the service was quick and i would imagine the screen was an off the shelf item, is there no way you could put it through the insurance??
