Mk 1 Eunos 1.8 Auto, 1994. The Pop-up headlights sometimes fail to rise when using the steering column stalk switch, but always do when using the facia button. If they don’t work when having MOT done, I think it will be a ‘FAIL’, so need to get it sorted. Is this a common problem? What should I be checking, please?
Neil B
Mine do the same. If I use the column stalk they rise after a while…sometimes within a few minutes, sometimes longer.
I suspect this to be an electrical contact issue in the stalk assembly although I don’t know how to prove this without replacing the unit. Let me know if you find out otherwise, please!
Mine has just passed its MOT so I guess so long as the service button works it should be ok.
I took the car to Paul Sheard’s place in Congleton to have the Pop-ups fixed. The problem was a relay in the engine compartment (back right-handside under a black cover). They told me it wouldn’t be a cause of MOT failure as the lights raised OK using the service button, but I prefer things to work as they should, so had the problem fixed.

Do you know which relay it was? I think there are two…a headlamp motor relay and a retract relay. Thanks
The guy at the garage referred to the relay as ‘the firing relay’, which I presume was meant the retract relay. Anyway, I’m fairly sure it was the one at the rear of the group, the blue one. The cost of the relay was £25, pluse diagnosis etc.

Thank you, Neil. I will look into that.
Hey, I’d welcome some guidance here. Where is the retractor relay situated? I have a service manual and this suggests it should be on the near side of the engine bay near the air intake. There is a plastic cover there on mine beneath which there are two relays, not three as my manual suggests there should be. There is a metal bracket with one relay mounted inboard (near the wing) and one outboard (engine compartment side). I’d expected there to be two one engine side with the rearmost being the retractor relay.
Ive see people mention a “flash to pass” modification. What is this and how do I tell if I have it?
Cheers, hope the above description makes some sense.
Found it, I think. Under steering column. I wonder why the different locations? Next challenge seems to be finding a replacement!
I’ve had a word with the garage where they fixed my pop-ups. I didn’t get the location of the duff relay right, it was not under the bonnet, but behind the dash, at the right hand side and it is black. So, HonleyA, it seems that you have got it right, and I’m sorry to have mislead you.
Best of luck,
Neil B
Thanks Neil. Found it! Bit of a contortionist job getting it out though… Cheers
There are actually two relays, one for main beam and one for raising the lights on sidelights (‘dim dip’). I should imagine they are interchangeable seeing as they do the same job.
A lot of people remove the dim dip relay so the popups don’t popup on sidelights. If you fancy doing that, you could just swap that relay in place of the broken one.
