possible supercharge........

Hello to the mx5 brotherhood ha ha ha …

I own a British Racing green MK1 MONZA MX5 1.6 and i am flirting with the idea of buying a Jackson Supercharger… Although this upgrade looks real quality, i have found turbo kits for £2000 less…

Knowing very little about engine upgrades but very much wanting to upgrade my MX5… I am searching for help from my brotherhood

Hi, but sorry to say you have picked the wrong car to modify. It has a 88bhp engine

A 1.8 has a 130bhp engine. A supercharger kit in basic form will give a 40%  power boost so that would be 122bhp. It is possible to get more power from the 88bhp engine, it is just not economic. Better to sell it on and buy the 1.8 Shock then start tuning

Thank you for your advice… I have seean mazda mk2.5 engine on ebay… Do you think i could drop that under the hood, instead of the supercharge or changing my car… Would replacing the engine cause any complications?

HI BRO Waving He he

The 2.5 engine is a nice upgrade, but there is a fair amount of work. IIRC the ecu and most of the engine bay wiring loom need to be changed for starters.

Might be worth having a word with these guys  http://www.performance5.com/

Thanks alot matey…

I thought my profile was upgraded, but i will look again… I have a mk1 monza 1.6

Just need a little more bhp!!! But i love the Mk1 and dont want to change the model so…

Early mk1 1.6 had full power, and the mk1 1.8s have more power too. Given how common mk1s are, and how cheap they are, I’d swap to one with more bhp as standard and use that as a base for further tuning if required. Or if you really want big power it’s much cheaper to buy a car that has been turbod or supercharged already, as depreciation on tuning parts is horrific. I’ve seen turbod mk1s go for less than £2,000 - which is less than the turbo kit costs.

Some people prefer doing the work themselves as it’s part of the fun, but if money is an issue then starting with a 88bhp 1.6 and supercharging it isn’t the way to go.
