Potential clutch release bearing issue

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Mk3.5 2.0l Sport Tech
  2. I’m based near: Skipton, North Yorkshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Clutch pedal vibration, potentially clutch release bearing

Hello, I’ve got a very strange issue occurring in my 2010 MK5. Just shy of 75k on the clock, apparently when the previous owner bought it from the dealer he requested they change the clutch, but I suspect they didn’t touch the bearings.

Essentially what’s happening is this, occasionally when I press in the clutch there is a slight bit of vibration in the clutch pedal and a bit of a whirring sound that lasts for a couple of seconds. It also only seems to happen when the engine isn’t at idle when it’s depressed, I.e. It doesn’t happen at idle I need to rev the engine a bit and then depress the clutch pedal to get it to happen.

I’ll try to get a video to show the issue but the sound is quite subtle and you have to know what you’re listening for.

My hope is that it’s not a clutch release bearing as it doesn’t happen constantly when you depress the clutch maybe it’s the slave cylinder instead causing the clutch to not disengage properly?

Before I bought the car, apparently it hadn’t really moved more than the length of the driveway in about 7 weeks. Previous owner was a meticulous chap and would keep the car in the garage on jack stands with the wheels off when not in use. So maybe it’s something that’s stiffened, degreased?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I’d really rather avoid having the gearbox dropped for no good reason.
