power steering and alternator belt change?

I’ve had a squeaky belt for a while and I think its probably time to change the belts anyway

How easy is it to do?

Are there any guides?

Also where’s the best place to buy the belts?

cheers

Yep, it’s easy to do. I changed mine the same time as the timing belt. Bought the parts from MXparts. There’s a good guide on here for changing the timing belt, and one for replacing auxiliary belts.

I always err on the side of caution when setting the tension. You can re-tension it later if it’s not right - if you over tighten you can damage the bearing (as I found out many years ago Embarassed ).

Yep, agreed, its fairly easy.  I changed both mine out a couple of months ago. The PAS belt is a lot easier than the alternator though.  This is due to both the tricky access of the alternator pivit bolt and also how tight the damn thing will be!  The bolt is at the back of the alternator but the thrad is towards the front so it get corroded.  Give it a good squirt of release oil.  Even then, it will be tight.

As is said, dont over tighten and watch how you adjust the lock adjuster bolt too.  You can break it.

Hi Zimmerframe,

and firstly to invade the thread…

I am about to do my PAS belt and alternator belt, there seems to be a lot of comments on the alternator belt as people have problems. But not a lot of info on the PAS belt. You have said that it is easy, would you mind explaining exactly what i need to do in very basic terms please.

Many Thanks

Adam.

Sorry for not replying, I’ve only just seen this.

You need to first slacken off the two 14mm pivot bolts.  The front one is reached through holes in the drive pulley, so you may need to turn the engine over to line up the hole and the bolt.  You can then slacken off the adjusting bolt.  The pump should then pivot down enough for you to remove the belt.

Fit the new belt and adjust the tension using the adjuster bolt so that the belt deflects about 9 - 12 mm, (about 1/2 inch) in the middle of the belt.  Then tighten the two mounting bolts again.  Sorry, I dont have photos or diagrams.

This bit - “The front one is reached through holes in the drive pulley” just saved me a load of hassle. Just want to say thanks.
