Power Steering cooler pipe ?

Any tips on best way to fit a power steering cooler pipe on a Mk1. Was told one needs to remove nose cone ? Any advice please.

I assume you’re talking about the existing pipe? If so, no, I changed mine when it got damaged and didn’t need to take the nose cone off.

Mine doesnt have an existing pipe as I am fitting PAS, have been told car doesnt need the cooler pipe. My ? was what is easiest way to fit pipe ?

Hi Martin just loosen the rad bolts and pull rad back enough to get your hands in. Or remove rsd altogheter DO NO T try to remove cone as bolts are always rusty/seized etc. The pipe has only 2x 10mm bolts holding it on to front crossmember bar . It fits on the inside nearest the front of the rad not outside near bumper

Thanks Robert… gear arrived Friday. Its all fitted & working, at present I am using a 10mm high pressure hose about 10" long which is doing away with cooling pipe. I have read the cooling pipe is not needed ???

Not all cars had the PAS oil cooler so I reckon you’ll be fine without it. I’m not sure of the reasoning behind which ones did and didn’t. If you’re going on trackyou may find the cooler an advantage, Project Merlot (Merlot) used to boil it’s PAS fluid and force it out of the reservior during a track day and had no PAS oil cooler. Project Merlot (Black) doesn’t seem to suffer the same and it has a cooler. It’s not a problem during normal road use.

Thanks Rob, this is type of info I am after. The Merlot was a UK 1996 yeh. Came with PAS so am guessing no cooler from new ? just wondering if it was the early Eunos models which had cooler due to warmer climate ? Out of interest what was pipe like on Merlot which had no cooler ie from res to return pipe from rack ?

Yep, it was a UK 1995 car IIRC which had PAS as standard. I’ll be honest, I can’t remember the pipe set up. I think it was a metal pipe from the rack with a push fit rubber hose using spring clips between that and the reservior. I think that may have been the pipe that rusted through and left the car in a cloud of smoke once.

No help to you, but I enjoyed reading though the posts to find it, click here

Thanks… I have used as described above. Won`t be doing any track days so hopefully be ok. I will keep my eye on it. BTW why is there an elec supply to pressure switch ??

It’s not a supply, it’s the Power Steering Pressure Switch. It’s a sensor so that the ECU knows when the PAS is operating. It can compensate for the extra load on the engine caused by the pump. For example, when A/C is fitted, it switches the A/C off when the PAS is operating during slow speed parking so there is not 2 loads on the engine.

fantastic info… answered my mind ?`s. thanks.

The pipe CAN be fitted and removed without the removal of the nose cone, and yes you can pypass the cooling pipe if needed because for normal road use/motorway it is not needed.

Hi Martin
Glad to see all worked out well .I personally would fit the cooler pipe but it may not actually be neccessary. Its a simple job to remove the rad and there are only 2 bolts holding the pipe on.Nice clean parts yeah !! No rusty bits !!

Hi Robert, not totally rust free or clean BUT happy with the parts & the service you gave.

Knowing hydraulic systems/pumps work better cooler than hotter I decided to go for a cooler, TBH the orig one just a pain to fit has not wanting to remove rad. SO made a new stainless one & going to run hose to it…

Luvly jubbly…

Very nice indeed, you shoud make a few of those, I am sure you would sell them.
