Power steering fluid leak

Hi, I seem to have developed a leak in the power assisted steering system of my 95 Eunos.  I’m on holiday in Devon with limited tools and no ramps.

It seems to be coming from the power steering fluid cooler pipe, just where it joins the rubber pipe from the reservoir. It looks like it’s corroded at this point. Having looked through this forum it seems this is a known problem. I have also read that in normal conditions this cooling pipe is not required. Has anyone ever removed this pipe and bypassed it, and if so how was it done and what was used?

I don’t really want to drive the 200+ miles back to East Berkshire with a leak if possible, and was hoping that with the help of a local garage, and some advice, I could make a repair until I got home with access to ramps and some decent tools.

Any thoughts or other ideas welcome.

Many thanks.

Dave.

I replaced a rusty, leaking length of steel pipe yesterday on my 2.5 with a length of hose purchased from my local Pirtek. It’s on the low pressure return side. I’ll replace that with the correct steel pipe from MX5parts one day. Good luck

Thanks for the reply Dave, unfortunately Exeter is too far from where I am and in the opposite direction from home.
So I’ve decided to risk the journey home hoping the leak isn’t too bad. I’ll top up before I leave and try to check at regular intervals. If it does run low while driving I’m guessing the steering will feel a lot heavier so I will pull over and top up again but if I’m on the motorway if I continue to drive to the next exit am I likely to do any damage to the steering rack? I’d rather not pull up on the hard shoulder but if it means saving the steering rack I will.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

It will be fine to drive with low oil.Best to keep ut topped up as you suggested but several members de-power the racks for track cars etc

Hope you manage to get home without any problems
