Power steering fluid level

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC
  2. I’m based near: Notts
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Ive not driven my MX5 for several days, but need to use it for work commuting (90 miles per day) as my daily is in the garage for bodywork. Checked fluids and levels today and I notice the steering fluid tank is nearly empty, plus it looks like there might have been a bit of a leak (might have been from the cap which didn’t seem very tight) Thoughts? I was going to top it up and monitor. Does any power steering fluid work ok?

Dexron II or higher equivalent, gets confusing, III(h))? .
Don’t risk running the PS dry!
I’d think a leak from the cap very unlikely unless you have been upside down.
Check all the PS pipes; you have lost quite a bit of fluid, so there should be a leak signature somewhere.

Mazda specify any Dextron 11 compatible ATF so Dextron 111 should be OK as that’s probably the most available fluid. There is a school of thought which says Mobil 1 ATF is the best and also another that says stuff sold as Power Steering Fluid is too thick and does not meet the Dextron spec anyway.
But fix the leak quickly if thats what you have and don’t just rely on topping up the PS reservoir as a fix.

Thanks!

As per the manual:
Mazda Genuine ATF M-III or equivalent
(e.g. Dexron® II)
