Power steering pump noise

Took the 5 for a run today, and noticed an ‘unhappy’ sound from the front when turning the wheel.
I’ve not noticed it the last few days, came on suddenly today.

Scenario:
- Sat stationary with the engine on idle
- all sounds fine
- start turning the wheel left or right
- clatter-clatter-clatter-clatter
- stop turning
- all sounds fine again
- start turning the wheel back
- clatter-clatter-clatter-clatter

If I gently rev the engine, with no steering input, it sounds normal, no clattering so everything mechanical sounds ok. It appears to only happen when there is load on the PAS system.
I checked the fluid level, that looks fine.

I’d been driving around for 30-45mins fine this morning, in and out of parking spaces all sounded normal. Pulled into Sainsburys car park about 5 mins from home and noticed the unhappy sound when parking. The PAS still appears to work fine, not noticeably harder to turn the wheel.

Might try get a video recording of it tomorrow, should help explain things better.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Did you check the power steering fluid level. If ok then the pump seems faulty .We may have one but I need to check

Fluid level looks fine. How big of a diy job is a pump replacement?

Update: tested it again yesterday but the sound has greatly reduced… I wonder if it’s a problem with the pas fluid being too hot as it appeared fine when first started and after a 10 min drive.

Need to try replicate it with a longer hotter drive.

I researched the same thing for my daughters Ford StreetKa, and it was suggested to change the PAS fluid.

I never got around to it before she sold the car though, so can’t vouch for any outcome.
