Powerflow Exhaust - Any Good?

Hi all,

Ive got a 1992 Eunos Roadster 1.6. I’ve heard the powerflow name thrown around a fair bit as a good exhaust because they’re supposed to be custom but not too expensive. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with them? I want an exhaust that makes the 5 sound louder and sportier, but not a reverberating drone on a motorway…

Cheers for any help,
Nathan

can’t speak about Powerflow but my experience on the mk1 after trying quite a few combinations, is if you don’t want drone or too loud, keep the cat and make sure any aftermarket exhaust has a two box system that keeps the resonator (middle box)

My 96 came with a Powerflow back box; they had just cut the pipe near the diff. It sounded alright, but I had a full stainless steel Mongoose system to go on, so it was donated to my brassic cousin for his 90 Roadster. Its custom, so I suppose there is no “standard pattern” Powerflow exhaust, and the ultimate quality comes down to the particular franchise. The lifetime warranty is nothing to be sniffed at.

I brought a Mongoose system in 1997, for a 1.6. Transfered to another 1.6 in 2000. In 2001, a bracket broke. Mongoose replaced it, no quibble. In 2005, the same system went onto a 1.8. I suppose around 2008 the mid silencer started to loosen up a bit. Mongoose replaced and fitted the new part for free. I parted company with that exhaust in 2019, when it went off into the sunset on a Roadster with a new owner. But the warranty isn’t transferable. Probably nearly 200k miles on that exhaust. I could have had a Mongoose system forever.

The MX5parts, Cobalt and even Racing Beat systems don’t have a warranty anywhere near that.

My NB has a custom built system based on Powerflow components and I’d agree with what carl_s says, keep the resonator box in.
I naively opted to delete the resonator believing that it might mute the rort.
Not sure if it (the resonator) makes the whole system any quieter under load but mine drones dreadfully at cruising speed. If I were to do it again I’d leave the resonator in.
HTH.

Thanks!

Okay, ill check out mongoose, any idea about cost for fitting and purchasing etc?

cheers

@ast I had a quote from a powerflow dealer at about £850 + VAT?! that seems a lot more expensive than I have previously heard jotted around the forum… any idea why the price has almost tripled since I post I saw from you in Nov 19 where it was supposed to be about 350?

If you’re down south try Infinity Exhausts near Bristol they will make you up a bespoke system to your car after talking though what you want. About £350 or £400 from memory depending on the components but very happy with mine :+1:

Wow, thats inflation and OTT. Are you sure that wasn’t for a Mk3 or 4? Unfortunately, Mongoose no longer list the Mk1 MX5 exhaust; it was a good system, and they once supplied all the exhausts to a Mk1 race series.

To fit an exhaust, less than 1 hour labour, but allow for some new rubber exhaust hangers, and more than likely, the studs on the cat will snap, and they will have to drill them out,

I’ll have a look thanks

Yeah im sure I must have done something wrong, ill continue enquiring and see how it looks. Have had a quote from MIJ exhausts in Walsall for about £350 for a Cat back system which sounds appealing.
