Pre-Production Mk1 MX5 differences

The 1989 Club Roadster concept was one of the 1988 pre-production Miatas; most were crushed, except for one red car that seems to have been used as a colour tester, prior to conversion to the show car. While a lot of the changes were for the show, there’s a lot of the original car left, indicating what might have been. Compared to the 15th production car:

Production car:

Pre-production

The steering wheel, leather covered dash and handbrake were the showcar additions. I’ve not seen a handbrake handle where the whole lot, including the grip, is covered in leather.

Production, base trim, door trim:

Pre-production

Embossed vinyl and a door lock in completely a different place. Actually, it makes more sense there.

Standard production clocks

Pre-production

Different dial faces, no chrome, less warning lights (no lights up)

Production

Pre-production

Different fan markings, square edge to openings

Cowl trim completely different.

Different camcover on the prototype. Rough looking plastic mouldings, and whats the cable operated round part to the right of the AFM?

Lump of wood
