Have you considered the AA or RAC? Both will do independent vehicle inspections (for a fee).
An experienced club member may be able to look at the car for an “opinion” who knows the faults of the car rather than spend money on an inspection. You can put up pictures of the car in question and within a few minutes you will get some replies. I would suggest taking it to a friendly garage and having it placed up on a ramp would cost very little.
Yes, I’d prefer a specialist if possible.
Car is in London, I’m not hence looking for London specialist preferably as for all I know it’s the dealers buddy that has the garage.

I did the very same for someone North of the border, car was around 15 miles from me. To say that member was very grateful for my report on the car. The car was a Cat D but not as it seemed in the pictures shown on the website. It was a poor repair and other stuff not mentioned in the ad I found. Wasn’t worth the journey and the family friendly business turned into a not so friendly outfit once they’d been sussed.
