When I loosen the petrol filler cap I get a sound of air rushing in, is this normal?
Yes its normal as fuel tanks can no longer vent to atmosphere the fumes from the petrol tank go through a valve and then through charcoal filter and have done for sometime now, the fuel tank is in effect sealed.
