PRHT rear glass trim

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __2009 NC (Mk3.5)
  2. I’m based near: __Lichfield
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __source and/or advice on trim surrounding rear window glass.

I’ve just had the 3 roof sections repainted. The black vinyl/plastic trim that bridges the gap between the glass, rubber seal and roof panel had deteriorated. The bodyshop believes it’s only cosmetic and doesn’t affect the integrity (water ingress). Accordingly they have not fitted a replacement. Maybe they are difficult to source? Any clues where I might buy one? On inspection I suppose it seems okay given that the area that would have been under the trim is now well painted and looks consistent with the rest of the roof. Any thoughts? Leave it alone or try to get it back to the original look? Cheers. Before and after pics attached.

It appears cosmetic vinyl type stuff and could be redone in matte or satin vinyl if you wanted, or left alone. The bits around the door glass would be easy enough but trying to tuck it behind the rear window rubber could be tricky - I’m sure nothing a seasoned vinyl person couldn’t sort.

Thanks for the comments. I’m feeling inclined to leave it be. If not done perfectly I fear the vinyl might cause a water trap along the seal which could start the paint lifting. I’d be curious to know if, in effect, this is just a length of vinyl tape or an actual pre-formed item with a Mazda p/n.

Well on mine I assumed it was stuck on as there’s a clearly visible seam where one is stuck atop the other on either top corner. That and you can clearly feel an edge if you run a fingernail up to it. I’d imagine it is installed before the glass is bonded in at the factory as after would be unnecessarily awkward.
