Private plate change to another private plate

I am not sure how to change my assigned private number plate on my car with another private number plate in one transaction online?
It seems like I have to remove the personalised number plate to retain it first. The car then reverts to it’s original assigned number. I then need to get my insurance to change my policy. I will then wait for 5 days for the new V5C to arrive before I can assign the new personalised number to my car. I will then get my insurance to change my policy again. It will again take another 5 days for the updated V5C to arrive.
It seems a long winded way. Has anyone changed a personalised number with another in one go?

Thank you, unfortunately it does not have anything about changing an existing private plate on my car with a new private plate.

That is how I think it should be done. Although I plan to take the personal plate off, leave the car off the road. Then when the V5C arrive change the plate again to the new plate and then inform my insurance as they will charge to change the policy twice.
It used to be possible to go straight to your new personal plate in the local licensing office, they just did the same steps back to back. but those offices are now all online.

That’s what I will do. Do the retention by post. Still drive with the old personal plate until I receive my V5C then add tge new personalised number online, call insurance just once. I have a driveway. I will keep the car in my driveway for 3 days until the V5C arrive.

I am not sure that you can continue to drive on the old plate until the paperwork arrives? You might have to take the car of the road?

OK, I will keep the car in my driveway off the road till I get my V5C then assign the new personalised number.

Agreed - if the car got caught on an ANPR camera then it might flag a problem.

I know that it’s only a few days, but your car will be bearing the wrong registration. Where will you stand with your insurance company if it gets stolen from your home during that time? I don’t know the answer, but I would want to in your position.
