Problem with 'clear' Waxoyl, has anyone used it before?

I bought some clear Waxoyl from Halfords today and had a nightmare applying it…

It’s this product; LINK

Firstly, I noticed it’s FAR from clear, there’s a definite yellow shade to it.  It reminded me of that expanding foam that builders use.

Second, I made sure to shake the can vigorously for a while before spraying, however after about 5 seconds of spraying it stopped coming out in a steady, even stream.  Instead it started to come out in ‘clumps’ which just fell to the floor and made a mess of my drive!

I tried the obvious like cleaning the nozzle and I even heated the can in warm water to make sure it wasn’t too cold but it made no difference.  I’ve got about half a can left that is unusable (and a quarter of it must be on my drive).

Any advice please?

Yep, same experience with the stuff in the aerosol cans. I suspect its probably better in warmer weather. And its always been that colour, ever since I used it to try and preserve my old Fiats back in the 80s… Back then you bought a big tin and a gun thing to use it, that worked fine…

Hi, yes used it lots. The aerosols do block in anything but the warmest weather. It will clear if you stand it in hot water for long enough (30 mins) and shake vigourously as there will be solids now blocking the line and nozzle which will take some time to warm and melt. Once working again take a bucket of hot water out with you to keep returning it to. It is yellowish but it also stays tacky so it will pick up dust and muck anyway and even melt in sunshine. It’s no good for decorative outer surfaces, ok for inside sections and underneath.

Dinitrol do a clear type which sets harder I think (not used it) Corroheat 4010, and 2 others I have used, cavity wax 3125 which is dark brown but sprays in much lower temps, and black 4941 which sets to a firm plastic/rubber surface suitable for washing like sill bottoms and under arches. Easiest is to put them into eBay to check details/order.

Never had any problems.  But my method is a gallon tin and a brush.  Much cheaper and more thorough application.  Aerosols are 10% product, 90% propellant.  To be avoided at all costs!  In my opinion anyway!

Yes, a brush perhaps for some easy to reach outside surfaces Geoff, though it usually ends up running down your arm! The old bicycle pump type syringe they used to provide 40 years ago was messy but very effective. You need to get inside sills and wings as well where a brush can’t get. There is a fair bit of white spirit type solvent in most of these products but the thinness of spray products helps in allowing it to creep into seams and soak into old coatings and muck.

I’ve never tried the aerosol version but I had no problem squirting several litres of the stuff in my Eunos with a small compressor and a gun with long nozzle like this.

I used a 1 litre can of waxoyl  as it screwed straight on and refilled it from a 5 litre can when empty.

Not sure where you are based but if you are near Norwich I can have a go with my equipment if you like.

As has been said before, you do need to get waxoyl warm for it to flow.
