Problems im afraid

I recently purchased a 5, first decent car in a while. Driving the new pride and joy up a hill, it failed, totally no power as if it had stalled, after a couple of attempts it fired again and we carried on as normal. I took it out on Tuesday night for a run to the shops about a 12 mile round trip, filled it up with fuel and generally had a nice time. Last night Thursday 19 Feb, went to go out for a spin and now it wont start at all, there is plenty of life in battery.

Needless to say im pretty hacked off with this, so called mazda reliability. Has anyone got any suggestions, i really enjoy the car, though that will be clouded if i have to start paying out constantly. The car was a private sale, i have spoken with the previous owner and he said that he has had no similiar problems. It is a MK2 1.8 (2000)

Hi,

Could be dirt out of the bottom of the petrol tank that has got sucked up and block the fuel line? Could explain why it died going up a hill?

Check the fuel filter. Bit of a long shot, but you’ve gotta start somewhere…

Sounds like a service is due - change filters, oil, plugs, maybe plug leads, etc - at least then you can start crossing things off, and you know it’s been done.
Our forum sponsor (MX5parts - see top right) can help you out - I think they might have a deal on a “Service Pack” at the mo…

Sadly had the RAC out and there is absolutely no spark whatsoever at all, believed to be some sort sensor problem. Last seen heading away on the back of a tow truck. Heres hoping this is just a blip, will keep you all update later next week.

Really sorry to hear, hope car is OK. Don’t let it put you off, could happen to any car.

My money is on the coil pack being faulty. It’s on the back of the engine and generates the spark.

Let us all know how you get on.

Bit of a blow if it is the coil pack as this isn’t cheap but it won’t be as frustrating ( or as expensive ) as replacing lots of cheaper things one after another until you find the cause.

Just remember that these cars are usually very reliable and once it’s running right you’ll soon forget this blip and realise that you have got the greatest fun car on the road today    [:D][:D]

Coil pack is a couple of hundred quid:

Not easy to part with! If it’s not the coil pack, before you start spending ££££’s on labour to try and find the fault, bear in mind a replacement engine can prob be bought for abour £500! Labour costs tinkering soon add up…

It seems im stuck with whatever the garage say it is anyway, so best pay up and look big! fingers crossed that its the coil pack and it can be fixed in good time. Its such shame, it strikes me that this would be a perfect weekend for having the top off and going for a bimble about - hey ho!, will keep you all posted.

Happy Daze - [<:o)]    The car it lives again, not sure if its me but it does seem to be a bit quicker on the uptake. Well done to Lansdown Mazda, who managed not to bankrupt me,  crank sensor and labour £175 and some pence.  Bring on the sunshine i want to get topless for the first time!!   [;)]   Thats for any of those 50 year old very handsome Mk3 drivers out there.

Darn it ! I’m too young and my car’s too old… [::(]

Dont feel bad, here is a wink for all 5 owners.  Can i add my “Ab exerciser” to your list of stuff unused.  Is it bad form to be involved with more that one area, western and wessex for example?

What do they say about it being OK if there in different post codes. LOL.

[;)]

Im not convinced about that postcode thing myself, but think that i will check out the Western OC to see what goes on around the Bath/Corsham area.  So if you see me out and about V4 JOW give me a wave,  yes, its Jane Of Wessex.
