Propshaft replacement jobs

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NA
  2. I’m based near: Essex

Hi all,

The universal joint on the propshaft on my MK1 has given up after some track usage and sprayed grease over the underside of the car. There is also a bit of vibration and the occasional clang coming from the prop.

I’ve ordered a replacement and plan to fit it this week. Ideally I don’t want to remove the diff etc as it’s just held on with 4 bolts. Are there any other bits that I may as well order and replace whilst I have the prop out?

Seals on the diff and gearbox perhaps?

Thanks,

George

If they aren’t leaking then leave them alone. The only one that may leak is the gearbox output seal, be aware that you may lose some gearbox oil when you take the prop out, so get the rear as high as you can to limit this.

Sorry for the late reply.

I jacked the car up as high as I could and fitted the prop without a drop leaking from the box. It’s actually a very easy job, took no more than 30 mins start to finish.

I’ve attached some pics of the new prop (I painted it to match my red differential).

Glad to say that the noises have now disappeared, so well worth doing if anyone has similar symptoms.
