R12 to RS24 Re-gas in Reading Area - Recommended!

Hi,

I had my R12 gas changed to RS24 today at lunch time by the following company. Nice guy, knows what he’s talking about and a good price (£50).

I said I would post his details up for others in the Reading area. He also does R134a if you have a newer car.

I’ve made it a stickey, this question often crops up

How do you know what air con gas is currently in place in your system?

Mine is a 91 roadster, and has now decided to run out of juice

If it’s never had a re-gas it will have R12 in it. It doesn’t really matter as if you need re-gassing it will be RS24 as R12 was declared a weapon of mass destruction many years ago.

Make sure you tell however you get a price from it is an older car with an R12 system. New cars have R134a gas, this isn’t a drop-in replacment as the seals/o-rings are different. I did ask about modding my car to take R134a, reckoned about £300.

As I understand it, Mazda started using R134a at the factory from 1994 onwards.

I am also led to believe that R134a is less efficient as a refrigerant than RS24 and that RS24 is as efficient as, if not better than, R12. Another reason not to spend £300 on an R134a conversion.

My '5 is a 1994 V spec. How would i be able to tell if i have R134a in it?

Also if does need an R12 drop in replacement, does anyone know anywhere round the wirral (cheshire) area that might be able to do it?

Thanks

Carl

As far as i know, all 1.8’s have R134a.  Mine was built in Sept 93 and has stickers under the bonnet saying “R134a” (though I gather not all cars have those).  I believe the two versions use different filler valves too, but I’ve not seen both types.

Hi, yes just checked under my bonnet and a little yellow sticker says R134A!

Thanks for your advice, a very handy thing for people to know and it means i can get it done anywhere now!
