A few of the cars I’ve looked at come with RAC or AA checks, sometimes with an accompanying warranty - do members have an opinion on these - do they have a reputation for being honest & accurate, and how exhaustive do they tend to be?

I’ve often wondered myself if either organisation actually turn up and inspect or they (the dealer) go through with the said companies guidelines and then stick a banner on the car stating the fact??
The AA and RAC are companies that are there to make a profit, they are no longer a “real members club” and have not been for years.
They charge garages for any service.
If you see an AA or RAC sign above the garage door, the garage pay for the service and have to agree to certain conditions.
They examine rather than strip certain parts for a proper look see! That would be far to expensive a cost to be added to the used car price.
Why have you not checked the AA and RAC websites, they advise what they do.
You could phone the organisations up and ask them to send you a typical inspection report.
That would answer your questions more fully.
The AA say they use “AA-approved engineers”, sounds as if they just set out a list of things to do and if the dealer/engineer agrees to work to those conditions they become “AA-approved”.
Hi Drumtochty.
Thanks for that. I’ve looked at the technical info on the checks they do so that’s not the issue, what I was trying to establish was how thorough or independent forum members feel these checks are (if indeed they have any experience of them) and if they have any experience of any issues with an inspection. I guess I’m always a little suspicious that if someone is paying for a service then the provider will tend to be influenced by the person who is paying them.
