I want to put a front grille onto my Twilight Blue mk.2, and can’t decide between black and silver. I’m leaning towards the latter - but if it was you, what would you pick?!
I would post a picture of your car & get someone to photochop both colour grills so you can see which you prefer. (or do it yourself if you can)
silver[H]
Polished aluminium or stainless steel. I made mine from 2.5mm aluminium sheet.
That looks very nice, Pollyanna.
A lot nicer than the one I fitted to my old car. I bought it from MX5parts, and always thought it looked a bit on the cheapo side. I haven’t bothered getting one for my new car.
silver for sure
You’ve convinced me - silver it is. [;)]
I’d go black, more discreet [;)]
D’oh! See, that’s the line of thinking that orignally led me to consider black … but one of the factors that swayed me back toward chrome is that at some point it’s likely that I’ll want to put some ‘style bars’ on as well, which I understand are much harder to source in black, and the mix of black and chrome metalwork on the same dark-blue car might look a bit odd.
Mike Satur style bar & windbreak----------Available in black
In fact there is a forum member selling a black one i believe but cant remember his name. A wanted advert will find him i
m sure.
Or you could just go for the silver grill…decisions - decisions. I used to be indecisive, Now, i`m not so sure [^o)]
Gotta go black dude. Chromeing is an obsession, have you heard the word BLING? Sometimes, less is more.
I’ve got a black 5, and had a silver grille on the front for a coupla years…have now gone to black…looks waaaay cooler and more discreet. After all…everyone has a silver grille!!
Anyone know where you can get black grilles for a Mk1? I’d like to paint mine and so stainless steel would be a pain.
That said, if they’re mega expensive the car’s getting stainless steel!
Black
Good ol MX5Parts do them
Silver.
You won’t see it if it’s back. You might as well not bother.

Consider which part of your car will be struck by grit, small stones etc more than the rest of the car. The grill will. I found, on something else, that the black painted items chip and show shiny or metalic bits underneath and so look tatty in a very short time. As you probly realise I prefer Stainless Steel to Chrome finishes.

It only takes a minute to remove and respray…
Get a silver / stainless steel grill and if you don’t like it spray it black
