Radio interference mk3 with lights rain and clutch?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2006 mk3
  2. I’m based near: Edinburgh
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: debugging radio static

Hello all, I’ve read many similar topics on here but none that quite match the interesting cocktail of electrical issues I’m facing.

Any advice or guesses to try out in the cold would be much appreciated!

I haven’t dove into wiring looms and tracing it all back to the start yet, slightly scary stuff.

I fear that the obvious answer is just to take this car to someone who knows what they are doing, but none the less here goes.

1- the alarm goes off all the time, not mobile phone related, not key batteries etc. could be alarm itself is dead, or the alarm battery. Long story short alarm has been removed, it was driving me nuts.
2- the radio (Bose) sounds like it is in a static tin can if it has been raining, or if it is humid outside (most of the time)
3- the radio sounds static (a less droney, tiny type than above) when the lights are turned on while the radio is on.
The static goes down when I hold the clutch down (while stationary)…
4- every now and then the radio resets itself (twice in 6 months)

So the result is the alarm is out and I don’t use the radio. Bar that, all good

Other useful stuff

Scuttle grommets are fine, sealed by precious owner, although signs of leakage before. However bone dry now, with some rusty bits

It has a dash cam, knock off type thing, wired into the glove box fuse box. Seems to be alright and I’ve had it in and out with no difference.

Heated seats and ac make no odds to the static issues

The radio has an iPod doc cable installed, never used it and not tried to remove this yet.

The car has led high beams and has older low beams (I believe all leds before the two low beams blew were the same kit / type, from Amazon or such)

There is an under bumber aftermarket daytime run light on the front bumper, which only half the bulbs on the strip bumber. It is plugged in, I removed it and the radio lights thing was the same, so I plugged it back in

Not sure where to start really bar take the whole thing apart. The kicker is I want to upgrade to double din but don’t want to waste my time here.

Thank you to anyone who takes a shot at unpacking that!

I immediately thought earthing somewhere on the car, battery, straps or even the radio unit itself. Have you taken the Bose head unit out and examined the wiring there and aerial connection?

I have not, sounds like a very logical starting point. I’ll have a look at this and let you know. Is there an original ground location for the Bose unit or the battery I should look for? Feel free to ignore that if it’s obvious I will have a google

Thanks!
