Rain water leak

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __2009 PRHT NC2
  2. I’m based near: __Lichfield
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __fixing leak

Hi
Apologies that this topic may have been covered numerous times. However, I have a lot of rainwater entering the car on the driver’s side. The carpet behind the seat is very wet. Until recently, the front was dry but now it’s got there as well.
I thought I’d found the issue because one of the drain pipes had become disconnected which I sorted and renewed the clip. There’s also a thinner black pipe that has a butterfly shaped clip that just seems to hang loose over the drain. Same on passenger side but no water coming in there so assume this is how it’s designed (?)
The drains themselves seem to flow fine when I squirt water down them.
I’ve also cleaned all the rubber seals on roof, doors, boot etc and applied silicone grease. No improvement.
Any clues what I should do now?
Thanks.

Have you properly dried the carpets out following the discovery of the disconnected pipe? You may be surprised how much water the sound proofing under the carpets hold. You renewed to lift the carpets to dry it all out completely.

Completely agree.
I also went another step and removed the standard water retaining sound proofing.

Have now installed closed cell foam sound proofing that does not absorb or hold water.

Was it one from the window seal mentioned in this post?

Thank you. These illustrations are really informative. The end of the hose that came of is the one shown as “works loose” :+1:

Hi Robbie. This is a fair point. My thinking was that it has gotten worse after fixing the hose but it could well be that the previous water has simply spread. I’ll get on and dry the carpets out thoroughly and then see what transpires.

I changed the standard clips on the hoses for plastic cable ties, as the standard ones were always coming off mine.
That was 2 years ago and they’ve never shifted since.

Well. Having used a vax to dry out the carpets, there has clearly been more rain getting into the car given the recent storms. I think the drains are partly blocked. Not enough for light rain but overflowing when there’s a downpour. Can the plastic grid cover be removed to allow a trombone brush to be pushed through? The attached article suggests the grid is stuck in place and can’t be removed? Everything I’m finding on YouTube seems to be soft top related rather than prht.
