Ramps

Hey up,

I can’t remember who it is, but somebody on here has as their avatar a pic of their car with its rear wheels up on ramps.

My question is; can this be done with a standard MK1?

Do I have to take any thing off? Like the rear skirt?

The car looks far too low slung for using ramps.

Whats the trick?

Thanks

the angle of std ramps is too steep for a 5 and the bodywork fouls before the wheels engage with the ramps.  I overcome this by using two lengths of wood (24" long), to decrease the angle and this enables me to drive to the top of the ramps, front and back.

The ramps I use are apparently “caravan level up ramps” which are quite shallow, but I have mounted them on a couple of staggered boards for a bit of extra height and it seems to work well for me.

I used 2 normal ramps with 2 pieces of wood attached to the bottom of the ramp to make the ramp less of an angle/

Make sure you put blocks on the ramp end though, so that they dont move when you are driving on them.

My Mk1 was ok on normal ramps for the rear, no added bits of wood etc. It was on standard suspension, I recall having to have wooden blocks for the front though to help it get onto the ramps.

Ditto to the extra pieces of wood to make the angle less, but i use nylon webbed strapping tied to the bottom rung of the ramps which is longer than the car, then run over by the front and back wheels, this is then trapped under the back wheels to stop the ramps spitting out/forwards as the car climbs the ramps.

Lots of stuff here but a touch expensive.

it is redmazda who has his car on the ramps

this is a real mx5 poser; colour coded ramps  Cool

If you mean “is it redmazda” no its not.

Purely coincidence I can assure you. Got them in the bargain bin at Halfords on day, but they do suit.

I use machine mart ramps no problem front and back I did not expect them to work so I brought some extensions from the same source but have never had them out the bag. I have a mk 1 on standard suspension.

Hope this helps

Oh yes it is.

Good advice about the webbing there!

These ramp extensions £14 from Machine Mart work well and stop the ramp slipping,

Mine are screwed to the boards so they don’t move.

I used a railway sleeper, cutting through the middle third diagonally with a chain saw and used coach bolts to fix pieces of 4 x 2 at the end to stop over run.
