Lets’ just say, he’s a pragmatist.

I was told by my mechanical engineering training instructor many years ago, to do the following two things in my working life,

“Never hear, always listen…”
“Never look, always see…”

He was right!!:+1:

Really good posts in here!

  • If you never try, if you give up, you will never achieve.
  • Work hard when you need to, slow down when you can. Cause otherwise eventually you will need to slow down.
  • Be grown up when you need to, be a child whenever the opportunity arises.
  • No pain no gain. Often times things that hurt are an experience you learn from. Confront your problems head on, it will build/add to your personality.
  • Fear of change yields no change. So if you want things to be different…
  • Treat others the way you would want to be treated. And just in general, be kind and helpful to people around you that have not yet proven they don’t deserve it.

Regarding that last one, during a storm a week or 2 ago I picked up the mess from 2 containers from neighbours when the containers fell on their side due to the wind. I used their doorbell but noone was home, so she told me through their electronic doorbell. I told her I’d take care of it. Never heard anything from my neighbours on the other side of the road. Good example of someone that I won’t help anymore

These are all kind of things that you start to understand as life teaches you lessons and you go through life and all of it’s problems. And if you’re open to learning new things these kind of experiences and the resulting wisdom can make your life easier and nicer!

One piece of advise I received from a rugby playing mate. Always get your retaliation in first.

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind… always…

Before the boom of social media the forums have a wealth of accumulated knowledge. However these days you really need to dig this information out.
A quick answer from the internet isn’t always the right answer…

Always question something you hear for the first time. If it makes sense learn it, if it doesn’t, figure out why.

I really hate the fact so many communities have moved to Facebook. I refuse to get Facebook for several reasons (privacy, refusing to give facebook even more power etc.) and that means you miss a lot. And that’s apart from the fact that dedicated board software works way better.

Questioning things more than incidentally makes people thing of me as a know-it-all, questioning information, what source etc. If if their logic fails completely or just the question of what the source is often annoys people. I guess that’s one of the disadvantages of having a scientific background and applying that in daily life

Fb is easy to use and many OC groups do have their own pages. But because FC it so easy to use you can get all sorts of “interesting” people there
Note, FB, Google, whatever company uses advertising for revenue they already have some data about you. That doesn’t really concern me - i choose what data i give them. What concerns me is that its addictive.

On forums you generally get older techy people, but for cars that were designed and made 30y ago this is where you will find information about these cars. And because it takes more effort you don’t get bombarded with spam and irrelevant material.

As for the last bit, I agree its a part of being an engineer. Although I may not know all the answers I always try to learn. And learning from your mistakes or things you don’t know is what makes you a better engineer. I work in an industry where mistakes can cause mechanical failures that will result to loss of life. You wouldn’t question every single thing you encounter during your working career and you make every effort to make the best job you can. But if you encounter something it doesn’t make sense you would try understand what is going on and if you still can’t make sense of it you wouldn’t keep quiet about it.

I have to say i enjoy speaking with people who like modding cars because you learn a lot from their experience and does make quite interesting conversations
