Rare MR2 MRS Caserta?

On holiday last week, mostly tucked away from the rain under a full car cover beside the chalet next door was a red 2002 Toyota sports car, and I thought it was an MR2. But in my few glimpses it did not look like I remembered it. I also only had a frontal view from twenty yards away while driving in.

SWMBO commented “How on earth did that climb over all these speed bumps and potholes?”

I never had a camera to hand when it was not hidden by their other car, and I kept forgetting the reg no.

The headlights were correct (rounded and bulgy) as for the 2002 MR2, BUT the bonnet front was not square cut along the shut line, instead it had a curve just like the MRS Caserta in this wikipedia picture. I only discovered the Caserta in the Wiki a few minutes ago (now back home again), and that implied 150 might have been made.

Is it a Caserta? Or was the body kit available for retrofitting? It looked utterly superb, much better than any standard MR2 I’ve seen.

I guess it was a good holiday, we were much too busy to do anything other than family!

Can’t help you, but you did inadvertently answer the question of which car a work colleague at my old job used to drive when I clicked through the other photographs, or at least I’m pretty sure it was the 90’s MR2 Hardtop:

He gave me a lift in it once, I admit I quite liked it.

He replaced it with a brand new Nissan Juke when they had just launched if memory serves correctly, I know whatever vehicle it was spent more time getting warranty repairs than getting driven and he eventually got rid of it.

There was a factory fitted kit that had big square arches, also rare but I think you would have noticed the arches more than the bonnet.
