Rattle from under the rear of car

Just bought the car so getting adjusting to the various noises going on around me.  There is a very noticable rattle noise coming from the rear when driving even at very low speeds - the sound is like the noise a loose wheel would make when given a good shaking.

I jacked the car up and gave everything a good shake to see what feels loose.  The only thing I can think is making the noise is the passenger side drive axle - there is a very small amount of play in it along the length of it - not side to side.  I’m not technically minded but the part attached to the diff moves enough to make the rattle - theres a slight bit of movement from the other side but nothing near as much as the passenger side one.  Only talk about a couple of mm, nothing too drastic.  The question is - should they be moving like that at all?  Maybe its because I have the car jacked up that there is the play in it!  (Told you I’m not technically minded!)Embarassed

Thre’s also another clanging noise when I shake the car.  Sounds more like the exhaust so that should be easy to get to the bottom of.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No idea on the driveshafts but I had a similar rattling noise from the back of the car - sounded dreadful.

Turned out to be a road chipping trapped between the back of the disk and the metal dust (?) shield. How an earth it got in there I don’t know as it took an awful lot of work to get it back out.

Similar thing happened to a friend’s car but he got two or three small stones trapped between the heatshield and catalyser. Similar terrible din - and just as hard to get them out too.

Thing was it was virtually impossible to find either rattle but both sounded serious enough to cause a lot of concern before they were tracked down.

Hopefully it’s a cost-free issue like these for your car.

I dont think it’s coming from there judging by the noise that I hear but definately worth a look!  Many thanks for that.

Does it stop when you press the brakes? Try lightly pressing the pedal as you drive along over a poor road surface. If the answer is yes, it could be the brake pad anti-rattle springs are missing.

Mine was a loose rear box heatshield, give that a try.

Good suggestions!  I’ll check out the above options and see what happens.  Many thanks for the help.
