Rattle when clutch depressed - NC3.75

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC3.75 2.0 6 Speed

My NC3.75 sounds quite gravely and rattly when foot is off the clutch pedal when idling in neutral and also when accelerating in low rpm. Once I depress the clutch there is no rattling sound at all.

Driven plenty of MX-5’s to know that a little gearbox rollover noise when in idling in neutral with foot off the clutch pedal is normal, but this seems to be louder than normal.

When accelerating in any gear in low rpm (1 to 2k rpm) it is more noticeable. Sounds like something rattling in the clutch or gearbox. Noise is louder when car is warm.

I’ve taken a quick video to show: NC3.75 Rattle Sound.mov - Google Drive

Maybe clutch release bearing? Or is it normal?

Any ideas or input greatly appreciated.

Kind of sounds similar to this problem here: Gear Rollover Noise? - MX-5 Miata Forum

Thanks

It will be your clutch release bearing, only cure is to fit a new one, you may as well change your clutch at the same time.
