Rattling - Pi**ing Me Off!

Yep… its another one of those classic “ive got a rattle threads” [:D]

However this isnt really a rattle, its like a “jangling” sound coming from the drivers side rear the sound is only audible when the window is open. Secondly when driving slowly (parking, creeping forward at junctions) I can here a “ticking” sound coming from the passengers side rear, I had some new tyres put on about 3 weeks ago but i dont suppose that would cause this sounds… would it?

Any ideas?

Rattles can be so many things, can’t they? Could be something as simple as something lodged in the tyre tread. Jack the car up and turn the wheel by hand and have a listen. Could be that the rear brake pads need adjusting. Have you tried adjusting the rear brakes?

If its any help at all, my rattles were:

Cat broken down, manifold had a stupidly small hole so sounded like a ticking noise. Stones stuck to label of new tyres, and the most fun, part seized caliper so pad was “rattling” about abit.

Hope that helps slightly

Yes, like what my learned friend says - bet it is a brake rattle! I like doing brakes [:)]

Thanx for the advice.

Ive just gone and had a look (and a play about) and the jangling seems to be coming from the pad fittings on the drivers side, they bounce about alot when going over bumps (metal on metal) and it jangles, i’ll try and tighten them up this weekend. Dunno what the ticking is on the passenger side though, will have to investigate further.

Most garages mess up MX5 rear brakes because they are unaware of the concealed adjusters and they do not use the correct fittings when changing pads. You will quite possibly find that the pads are loose in the calipers and require adjusting in. If the fitting kit hasn’t been used, you can get one here:-

The ticking might be because something is stuck in one of the pads. Whip them out and have a look - it only takes a few minutes.

If you haven’t done your brakes recently, it is worth fettling them up and you never know, it might just sort out your rattle at the same time.[:)]

Yeah i’ll do that [Y],

Could this be anything to do with the passengers safety belt rattling against the side of the door pillar? It was one of the rattles on my car caused by this, so I bought and fitted the belt tidy that are fitted to the Mk2 version.

I’ve had a rattle in my Mk3 for the past couple of weeks. Turned out to be the sun shield though it sounded lower in the car.

You won’t believe this, I can hardly believe it either but, I went out to a garage an hour ago and I heard the same sort of rattle that you describe.

I thought it was the safety belt hanging loose as it hadn’t been put back into it’s little tidy thing. On the way home it started to rattle again so I stopped to check inside the boot. Although the lifting jack handle was in it’s place in the three clips it wasn’t tight in the clips and neither were the clips in the panel. I took them out of the panel and while driving home I didn’t hear the rattle at all. Can you try the same on yours and let me know if it works for you?

After buying and picking my mx5 up from Wales , I had the pleasure of the long drive back to London.

So I am driving along happy with my new car, when I hear this rattle, straight away negative thoughts set in …oh no have i brought a wrong un here etc!

The rattle persisted all the way home I searched high and low then the next day to my amusement I noticed the novelty surfboard hanging from the drivers mirror of course i had noticed it before, but there was a smaller metal keyring concealed beyond eye view behind the mirror…problem solved…drove me mad for a while!

This has stopped the rattle behind the passengers seat. Wrap insulation tape around the jack handle at the point where it contacts the three nylon clips in the boot.

Further to the above reply written by me, I have found probably are neater way to fix the rattle of the jack handle in the boot. If you remove the three nylon clips and warm up the nylon clip at the point shown in the picture just enough to soften the nylon you can then squeeze the two "fingers " together until they are touching. Hold the clip in this position until the clip has cooled down then replace them on the steel shield. You should find that the handle is now held in place and doesn’t rattle.
