Re: Replacement of Vinyl Hood (with glass rear window)

Some advice from people please - I have a MK 2 MX5.  The hood is looking decidedly tatty - there is a small split that appears on one side of the hood and I suspect if left it will only get worse.  I am hoping to sell the car in August (when the car wil get 13 months MOT on it) but I am wondering whether to leave the hood and price the car accordingly or pay for a new hood (costing between £250-£350).  Other than the problem with the hood, the car is in excellent condition and has a full service history.

If I decide to go down the route of replacing the hood, should I go for one with a glass rear screen or go for one of those with a plastic rear screen?  And assuming I do go for this option, can anyone recommend where I can buy a new hood and have it fitted.  I live in the Huddersfield area.

As ever, anyone’s advice would be much appreciated.

Regards
Dave

any buyer of a mk2 will expect the standard glass rear window so no choice there. Personally I think the hood wont increase / decrease the cars value by as much as it will cost, but will be used as a negotiating point. I would leave it unless its leaking badly, you may get a buyer who will garage it and wont want the hood up, they will still expect a reduction in price but not as much as £300…

Some buyers might appreciate a “concession” on the asking price and then being able to choose whether to opt for a cheap vinyl/plastic hood or a more expensive mohair/glass one at their own expense. On a car without air con I would probably opt for a glass HRW myself.
