Re - Which is the Best - All Weather - Breathable Cover for Winter

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __Mark 3
  2. I’m based near: _Pontefract
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Winter Covers

Want to keep the car at home over winter but outside - you do get nice days in December so do not want to put into storage but need a good quality cover - please recommend

I also need to get a cover, mostly just for when it snows.
as there is no way I am going to risk taking it out in the snow!
I’ve tried that before in rear-wheel drives and it just isn’t worth the risk.
anyway
I’ve seen a few on eBay ranging in price from 35 to 80 quid but have no idea on the quality.
il be going over to the local (30miles away) Mazda dealership in about 3 or 4 weeks and I shall get the price for a genuine Mazda one!

Hi - want a cover that breaths not rust - same in my motorbikes in the 80/90s = hope we get some advise

Consider just a hood cover, the bodywork can breathe then and won’t get scratched as the cover moves in the wind.

UK custom covers do a hood cover for £80.

MX-5 parts sell a selection also including the Mazda one.

thanks mate.

so for me i need a soft backed cover to prevent paint damage as i will be primerilly using it when it snows.

I bought a cover for my ND as its outside.
Check the detail, as you’ll still have ti ‘air’ the hood and also wash and reproof the cover.
I sent mine back, why would I washa nd reproof both hood and cover, ill just stick with my hood

Half cover. The Mazda half-cover is surprisingly durable, I used one for a couple of winters on my Mk4 (garaged since). It stays on, and did not scratch the areas of paint it was in contact with - when putting it on, I always went round the waistline and screen surround with a microfibre cloth and waterless wash.

Never reproofed the cover - although I did clean the outside with a cloth and a bucket of ‘soapy’ water now and again.

I’ve got one of these

Ultimate Outdoor Car Cover in Outdoor car covers (classicadditions.com)

Cost me £200, but the quality is amazing, very soft inside, I had it on the car for 3 weeks before I took it off and no problems at all, no condensation or damp or any scratching that I could see.

I have to leave the car outside so I wanted some protection and have read a lot about covers scratching paintwork.

After the 3 weeks it was still perfect underneath. However, I can’t comment any further until it has been on the car over winter.

Bear in mind the car must be perfectly clean before you put the cover on. If you’re laying it up that’s fine, but if you want to use it and take it on and off a cover is probably not the best idea.

Hope this helps

This info might help, Re Car covers …
I have an immaculate MX5 NC Soft top…and would scream out loud if a “Top cover” damaged it In any way…
I bought a “MX5parts” half cover. (£40) And after a year there is no marks whatsoever to be found on my car, Of course, The half cover has several benefits (1) it prevents cats getting onto the top ( for comfort ) And scratching with their claws etc, (2) Pigeon mess is a very staining substance if it is left on the Soft top material … Both are prevented with the soft top half cover … I believe they are slightly more expensive since I bought mine ( about £50 ) but priceless In protecting the car. Remember too… That these Half covers only touch a small part of the paintwork Mostly 95% Of it is on the ‘soft top’ Material only !
In high winds. It is helpful to tuck the side parts “” inside Of the two doors And tuck the front part inside of the bonnet and same with the rear part into the boot. It only takes a minute longer but prevents movement during high winds. It works !! Hope this helps too🌝
