Rear bumper respray

Hi,

The rear bumper on my Mark 1 has faded and now looks a little out of place compared to the nice red colour on the rest of my car. I was wondering what my options are for a respray? could i remove the bumper myself and paint it or is a bodyshop better able to do this?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben.

G’day Ben—

Your biggest problem is matching the paint. Red is notorious for fading as you have found out, and the body colour will be different shades all over the place. A decent paint shop wouldn’t charge a whole load of money for the bumper especially if you take it off and deliver it to them.first getting them to get as near a match as possible from an adjacent panel

I resprayed the whole of my car about 3 years ago because after only respraying the back half, the front was a different shade due to the the rest of the car paint fading. I wouldn’t even contemplating respraying a part as large as the bumper with rattle cans tho’.  The bumper doesn’t need to be removed as it easy to mask it off from the rest of the car. To do a decent job you need a compressor and spray gun and STANDOX two part paint plus a breathing mask to stop you breathing in fumes from the paint.

Try Dave at Deepcar Autobodies near Sheffield. He is a an MX-5 enthusiast and gave me a very reasonable quote refinish both bumpers on my Mk1.

Thanks for the help everyoneSmile
