Rear camera fuzzy grey lines

My brother, a car mechanic, is trying to attach a rear reversing camera to my Mazda MX-5 Mk2. The front camera, attached to the module, is working fine. The rear camera isn’t working and just looks like interference on the screen, with fuzzy grey lines rather than a live stream. Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this? (In layman’s terms as I’m not particularly technical when it comes to working on my car myself).

That might be the wrong line standard chosen.

eg this Vtopek has twelve possible. The Az page lists them all and how to switch between them.

Here’s how I fitted one in my 25AE to replace my first attempt.

Thanks Richard for this advice and swift response. From the Amazon link you sent, are you suggesting I get the connector to find the right channel? I already have a rear camera attached (see attached photos)

Many Thanks Sam

The camera is clearly connected. But the display cannot lock on to it.

Unfortunately it is sending an incompatible number of lines and fields for the display .

At a guess the display is NTSC (525 lines at 60 fields) and the camera is PAL (625 lines at 50 fields). Or it may be vice-versa. Or it might be something else entirely.

It might be possible to tell the display to look for a different line standard. If so try switching through its options to see what happens. The camera I mentioned covers most options, and the Alpine head unit knew about two of them.

Alas, without knowing what actual devices you have it’s impossible to say any more.

Give me the exact make and model number of each, and I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Richard,

Apologies for the delay. I was gifted the camera, so was waiting on some info.
This is the front camera: 10" Mirror Dash Cam,Touch Screen Smart Rear View Mirror Camera, 1080P+1080P Dash Cam Front and Rear, Night Vision, Reverse Assist, Loop Recording, 24H Parking Mode, Included 64GB Card: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I had to buy a replacement rear camera which is here: Auto Rear View Backup Camera 2.5mm AV-IN for Car DVR Camcorder Black Recorder Box Dash Cam Dual Recording Stereo Aux GPS Video Tablet Input: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo .

Alas, you bought the wrong rear camera!

The front unit is superb, and expects to see pictures from its companion 1080p camera for equally superb rear pictures.

Unfortunately the rear camera you bought is only 480 lines and not compatible.

You’ll need to do some detective work to find a rear camera that is 1080p, and has the same mini-jack connector as the original. If the connector is not to that standard it gets complicated with wiring and power supply voltage etc.

Thank you @RichardFX . I’ve sourced a new camera so hopefully that fixes the issue. Sam
