Rear Coil Springs Corroded

Hi

Put this topic in Car Talk as there was a similar thread that touched on this.

Just passed MOT for my MK2.

Have advisory “Rear coil springs corroded”.  I don’t think the garage is trying it on for un-necessary work but I guess it needs looking at.

How serious is this?. Is there anything cheap and easy that can be done?.   Any idea of costs?

Sorry for duplicate.

a lot of coil springs have rust on them, have you a friendly garage who can put the car on a lift so you can have a look.   so you can see how bad they are. if not to bad some work with a wire brush and a touch of paint or even grease will sort it.

Ok Thanks
Back from holidays now so need to look into this.

What would be a good way of doing this?.

For example

Jack up wheel
Cover brake parts
Pressure wash springs.
Spray with oil/grease (what sort).
Do other wheel.

I wouldn’t waste your time on the springs. If they are already rusted, grease or oil won;t do that much. Better off putting a bit aside for new springs. Factor on £40 a corner to fit if you can’t DIY, and £60 for a pair of pattern springs.
