Rear fog light for a Enous Roadster to pass MOT when import

Hi all, I have a Eunos Roadster overseas and planning bring it to UK, I had searched some old posts said MOT can be passed if convert the offside reversing light with a red bulb and proper wiring with a rear fog light switch.
I hope to know that the requirement of the first time MOT when the car just arrived UK is same as the annual one, so that I can obtain MOT to put a red bulb with the clear lens works as rear fog light?

Sorry that the question maybe silly but I am not familiar about the rules to import a car.

Thanks,
Owen

Yes, I have done this and fitted a high intensity RED LED bulb in the OSR light reversing light and it passed every time. Much better than the added rear fog light that hung off the bottom of the rear bumper :+1:

Yes it will pass unless you get a Knowledgeable tester. The Fog is too close to the brake light to be strictly legal

It was done exactly the same on my Eunos, it has the rear right reversing light converted using a high intensity red LED bulb and a high intensity white LED in the rear left light. It’s had 5 MOT’s and never had a warning nor comment.

The switch for the fog light MUST have a warning light that illuminates when the fog light is on. My switch is in the switch panel on the right side of the dash. Fog light only works if side/main lights are on.

I think this is an urban myth. It does not appear in the MOT testers manual. Also, it’s not uncommon for some vehicles (MB and Vauxhall for two) where a rear position lamp in the same housing as a brake light operates as a rear fog lamp by virtue of having a double filament bulb.

JS

Not really an urban myth read the vehicle lighting regs

ii)Minimum height above the ground: 250 mm
(d) Minimum separation distance between a rear fog lamp and a stop lamp–

(i)In the case of a rear fog lamp which does not share a common lamp body with a stop lamp:|A distance of 100 mm between the light-emitting surfaces of the lamps when viewed in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle| But as it shares the same body this may not apply

Thank you for all the replies above.
I think I will go ahead to convert the offside reversing light rather than hang one at the rear bumper.

along as there is a button that can switch it on and off rather than having to put it into reverse it should pass.

Reverse lights are not needed on cars before September 2009.

Further to my earlier response on this thread. I sourced some nice high current illuminated dumpy switches and made a removable panel out of an old lower steering column cowl and the result came out well (Aux Cooling Fan left and Fog Light Right) and is easily maintained

I suspect the issue over the spacing of lights is an example of when something isn’t an MOT failure (since it’s not listed as a reason for failure in the Tester’s Manual) but it isn’t strictly legal either (as it doesn’t meet the requirements of the Lighting Regulations).

So it’s the sort of thing that a very knowledgeable policemen might pick on if they pulled you over for some reason, but it’s not going to mean the car doesn’t pass its MOT.

As far as foglamp performance goes, converting the reverse lamp makes for a rubbish one. Instead of the highly visible bright red thing that helps stop a truck slamming into you, you have this feeble pink effort. My S-Limited had been wired like this. My S-Special has a brick.

You can attach a conventional foglamp without damaging the bumper, to pass an MOT, and then you can think about a proper solution.

One of these days, I will do something that makes a virtue of this. Maybe mounting a bracket to the rear panel, behind and above the bumper, rally style.

One of my favourite Eunos Roadsters

Thank you for the kindly advice above. I had a rear fog light switch ordered from mx5parts which has inbuilt indicator light and hope can find a proper way to balance the performance and the appearance.

I always liked the triangular RX-8 lamp someone fitted in the bumper. When I’m not on my phone I’ll look for a photo…
