my first foray into the world of mx5 ownership and my first evening on here. i am a very happy owner (3 weeks) of a 1991 1.6 manual in red, though oxidised pink is a bit closer to the mark at the moment.
this weekend i swapped the previously installed cheap illuminated toggle switch for the fog light (top brake light) and re-used the toggle for hard top heated rear window. i have an oem fog light switch but it only has 4 pins and all of the wiring info online i have found shows 5 pins. bought switch on ebay…is it duff or correct? it does look like maybe it had a spade pin in terminal 5 as it is a little dirty where slot 6 is clean.
problem i have is my dashboard lights are now not working. the cheapo toggle switch had a +/earth/lights all connected i have only connected the + & lights to the middle 2 terminal on my oem switch and the fog light works. the earth labelled connector wire is now loose. i have tried this connector on the 2 free terminals on the oem switch and the 1 on the cheap but dash lights did not come on
The switch that you have is from a UK MX-5 and doesn’t have the tell tail light, the tell tail was on the instrument cluster on UK cars. You can get a switch with a tell tail from a 323 that has 5 pins. Some people I believe use the night time illumination part of a UK switch as the tell tail. Does that answer all your questions?
so the tell tail light is indication that switch is closed (fog on). i have ordered a 12v led to add that part later. is there a wiring diagram for the uk switch as need to know where to connect the spare connector i have to get dash lights working
Yes the tell tail is an indication that the light is on, it’s an MOT requirement. It’s easy to check which terminals do what, 2 terminals will show open circut with the switch off and continuity with it closed, the other 2 will show resistance through the bulb.
