Hi,
I have my Mk3 in the garage at the moment because of noises coming from the rear. I have just been called by the garage to tell me that the left hand rear bearings, hub, housing and all the seals and bits that go with it will need replacing and that it is going to be expensive! He also said that there is a noise coming from the diff also just for good measure! He has advised that the bearings etc are changed first so wanted to know what people usually replace with and where they purchase from? I am not all that knowledgeable with cars so to know exactly what I would need would be appreciated. I only use the car on the normal country roads so not looking to replace with anything up-rated
Thanks for your help in advance
Chris

The garage is just as confused a you are.

The rear wheel bearings on the other hand does not come as one unit even from Mazda. The parts cost is £35 to £60 depending where purchased and fitted would be nearer £200 fitted.

The bearing do not changed with te way you drive they are a standard component.
The Mk3 diff can be a bit noisey.
Hi Drumtochty,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I had found the bearings on MX5 parts, he did say that the hub and cover would need changing also and suggested I look to source the parts myself. On MX5 parts I found two hubs (links below) and not sure really how much he thinks needs replacing, as he is suggesting a big bill which must be more the £40 + labour

This is not neccesary as it is just over the top.
These are the instructions from the Mazda Workshop Manual

If he wants to replace all these parts, that means they do not have an hydaulic press and a bearing puller, phone a Mazda dealer for a quote as I think it may be cheaper but I will leave you to check that out.
Hi Drumtochty,
Thanks for your reply, that manual is very useful.
Thank you for all your help! Very much appreciated.

I don’t want to dismiss what your garage are saying especially if you trust thier judgement.
However, it’s well known that a lot of road noise is transmitted up the drain tubes.
In fact, i was convinced that I had a wheel bearing going, my local MOT station had the rear end up in the air and spun it up through gears.
Nothing wrong with the bearings he said.
One particular day, I was driving along a stretch of road that had about a dozen resurface patches.
On each and every patch, the noise subsided.
A few members have covered the bottom of the drain tubes to reduce the noise
