Rear number plate lights

Hi
I have some bubbling paint on the underneath of the boot lid , ( Mk 3 2006 ) so I want to remove the 2 plastic oblong lights to repair and paint the area, as well as changing the bulbs if needed.
My question is, how do I take these off as I cant see anything about them in the handbook
Thanks
Boz

Push the lights to one side ( from memory to the right ) and then pull the opposite end outwards.

I’ve got pics I’ll post up later, I did mine about 2 years ago.
Basically as above poster has said you push the clip in from one side and it releases the unit, rather like the side repeaters. Get an old credit card or thin blade behind the unit to release the clip, go gently it’s all plastic.

A couple of pics from when I did my boot lid. If you notice both left and right lights fit in the same orientation, so does the centre blank. If I remember correctly you push your thin tool/blade under from the left as I explained above and it should pop out.

And just to add, it won’t be rust if you have the soft top version, the boot lid is aluminium so just clean it up, prime and paint.

A great help, thanks chaps.

It is in my 3.5 handbook…

I have replaced just the bulbs with some very cheap, ordinary single led bulbs, rather than the multi-led type, which I suspect wouldn’t fit in as there is little length available in the housing.

Looks really good

You can buy short multi-LED bulbs which will fit (I put them in my car).

You’re right that many of the multi-LED bulbs are too long to fit into the housing. You can also buy complete LED units which replace the whole light fitting for not a lot of money on eBay and elsewhere.
