Rear Offside Suspension Knock

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2011 Sport Black
  2. I’m based near: Midlands
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Suspension recommendations

For a few weeks I have had the metallic knocking from the offside rear, which having looked up there with my inspection camera, discovered it is a worn and split Bump Stop.

There is also oil mist around the Bilstein Damper, which most likely means I will take the hit and replace all 4.
I realise everyone has their own preference, but I await your damper suggestions and recommended places that will fit these in the Midlands.
I don’t want to lower the ride height or take it on the track, just decent feel and cornering, without hitting the 2k mark…

I had a set of MeisterR’s fitted in Sheffield (Roddisons) a few years back. It’s worth the trip just to get his advice on what’s best for you and the car. You’ll need a full alignment afterwards too, he’s the man to go to.
You don’t have to go with the full lowering adjustable ride comfort package (CRD’s) they do a Sportive unit, you just get the height adjustment to suit.
I think you can get Bilsteins rebuilt but at what cost, who knows?

Many other brands available, I’ve heard good things about Tein’s too but never experienced them

Thanks for that Mick.
Were they the Sportive Coilovers?

The last NC I owned, the Recaro had Sportives fitted by Roddisons pre my ownership.
The NC before that I had MeisterR’s fitted, the ZetaCRD’s, adjustable for ride comfort.

I’d say if budget allows go with the ZetaCRD’s, many on here have only good to say about them. We all have our preferences of course.

My 12-plate Sport Black has 85,000 on the clock and original suspension other than new rear springs.
I am anticipating biting the bullet at some time and, having read plenty of advice, Meister CRD’s are the default remedy for when the shockers eventually go.

Thank you for both for your advice.
I will look at Meister CRD’s later on this evening.
First glance shows they retail at just over 1k for a full set.
Cheaper than a new Homura though……

You could just change the dampers? For the same money you could possibly get something quite sophisticated.
The springs on the recommended coilovers look very unforgiving to me. Just their smaller diameter suggests they are going to be harsher.
The original springs look a lot more forgiving.

I agree, if you simply want to restore the suspension back to how it felt with some improvement then there are bound to be some great proven matched damper and spring setups available. Coilovers can be a big step change if you were happy with stock handling and not specifically looking for what the coilovers offer.

The issue I anticipate having when replacing my original Bilsteins is reading that these are made to spec for Mazda and not necessarily what you get from Bilsteins (B8s?) after market. Maybe they are so close anyway that the average Joe can’t tell the difference.
The feedback I’ve read is that something like CRDs are just as comfortable as the original setup when on the softest settings and not much more costly than keeping the springs and just replacing the shockers.

I spoke to Roddisons this morning and they recommended MeisterR Sportive, to get the same feel and performance as the original Bilsteins.
They will order them in and fit next week.
So…… booked in and thank you all for your inputs.
I will update when they have been fitted.

Sport Black in at Roddisons today for a full set of MeisterR Sportive’s, Tracking and a pair of rear Drop Links.
All completed by Paul and his companion within 6 1/2 hours. Great improvement on handling and so much more responsive.
Great recommendation from you all.
