MX5 parts advise that their standard MK1 rear springs are the wrong size for my 93 S-ltd and have offered to get the correct springs from Mazda - at £123.53 each including VAT. Are there any other options I could explore?
The rears aren’t the wrong size as such; I think there is very little different in length. But they are a bit stiffer. If MX5parts are sourcing from Mazda, this will be a special order from Japan.
Lesjöfors in the US do list a coil spring for Bilstein equipped Mk1s.; SKU #4255427
This application is rear spring for 1993 Miata LE and 1994+ Miata R Package
RockAuto list this as “out of stock”. The manufacturer is Swedish, and has a UK agent:
https://www.europeansprings.com/
https://www.lesjoforsab.com/spring-company/lesjofors-elland.asp
Might be worth a call.
Standard Mk1 spring specs are here:
http://users.telenet.be/miata/english/suspension/Springs.htm
The rear differs because it is stiffer, at 110lbs.
The alternative is to have replacement springs made, by a company, such as European Springs.
Thing is the spec; the length should be the same as stock, as is the width, but the S-Special, like the LE and R-Package might have a different number of coil or wire thickness, or both. Maybe LESJÖFORS has the specs on hand.
Unbelievably, googling LESJÖFORS 4255427 gets a UK hit, and its cheap!
The listing does say “for bilstein shocks”

Seems too easy, as this is the rear spring for all S-Specials.
Hi! Thanks for your help with springs. I’ve found stock of the Lesfjovors 4255427 at CES for £35.70 +VAT.
