Rear Subframe replacement cost

Morning,
Having missed out on a Mk3 because I had to wait a day, I’m now looking at others and have found one which seems clean, but has an advisory of “Rear Sub-frame is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced”

This doesn’t concern me immediately as the price is very reasonable, but for completeness, can anyone give me a rough idea of cost to replace the rear subframe.

Thanks in advance

Could be wrong but I’m sure someone told me that to get a new one from Mazda would be £1200 minimum….

Hearing a lot recently about this impacting NC’s at MOT time, a local owner has decided to scrap a 2006 NC rather than spend £2K to resolve this.

Another local owner is looking to source spare parts, I’d say the MX5City option looks like a good source if they are as described.

My thought would be that the MX5City subframe is indeed rust-free now, after being blasted and powdercoated, but what was it like before? How much metal is left? Powdercoat hides everything.

On the other hand further inspection might reveal that a good rubdown and treatment may well be all that is needed due to “MOT Speak”.

You need to look at it yourself. MOT advisories are just that, one individuals opinion. I would be surprised if any early MK3 models have a rust free suspension by now unless treated. If you don’t know what to look for then find someone in your local group who does.

2016 is a very late (improbably late) NC to be scrapped because of rust problems.

It is, edited…

Yeah, I know what to look for, just wanted to know worst case scenario on cost really. If the price is right, I don’t mind buying something and getting the work done

I asked a specialist guy in Newport Shrops how much it would cost to powder coat an NC3 one if I dropped it off. His reply was …

"depending on whether the frame etc has been powder coated before. And all bushes are out etc.

You are looking at about between £200 £220. To have them stripped back and re coated. "

This was 6 months ago.

My MK3 has the same issue I’ve orded all new poly bushes and a reconditioned rear subframe even though mine looks solid if not very rusty! The idea being less ramp time if I have the replacement ready to go on then powder coat my old one and then sell on to recoup some of the cost of the replacement fingers crossed. I will be using penetrating spray on all the bolts for the next week or so to help hopefully free them off a bit… Thankfully I have the use of a workshop and ramps so it’ll be my labour plus parts think I’m in at £600 ish for parts so far.
