rebuilding MK1 rear caliper - advice please

Hi

I have been given a MK1 rear caliper and new piston. It is in excellent order but needs a full seal kit and is missing the circlip that locks the adjuster screw in place.

is it possible to fit one of these circlips without special tools? Just wondering because my circlip pliers will not reach and I am hoping to avoid buying a tool just for this job.

I am going to buy…

Please take a look at the picture of included parts

Can see where all the parts fit apart from the ‘O’ ring and the seal above and slightly to the of the ‘O’ ring in the picture.

Not sure where these parts go unless it is on top of the circlip - can someone please confirm.

One more question please - not rebuilt a caliper before. When inserting the piston after fitting the main seal washer, Do i just rub a little of the special grease on the piston and push it in?

Thank you

The MX5parts kit includes the circlip.

The kits come with assembly grease but do not use too much.

Take pictures when you take it apart or do sketches to assist you when you put the thing back together.

Can I advise you as I have rebuilt a good few calipers.

The first one you do should be under the supervision of someone who has done it before as there is a knack to doing it, many on this forum will disagree.

I now buy a refurbished caliper as in my opinion the hassle of doing it yourself is not worth it.

Thanks for your reply Drumtochy

A circlip should be with me tomorrow with luck - hoping I can fit it without special tools?

Does the ‘o’ ring and seal in the kit go on top of the circlip?

Unfortunately I do not have anyone around who has done this before. Appreciate what you are saying re reconditioned caliper but for the sake of £10 for the kit and circlip + your kind advice wanted to have a go at this myself. Is the part that requires knack fitting the piston in past the washer seal?

Thanks

If using compressed air to remove the old piston, keep your pinkies out of the firing line.

Ask me how I know it bloody hurts!!!

I have not rebuilt a rear caliper as the last 5 I have changed belonged to friends. I just said to them buy a refurbed caliper and I will fit it.

Here is a how too

Here is a youtube video of how to do it

Thanks for the links - exactly what I needed. Doesn’t look like there is a shortcut for the circlip though.

Luckily the piston is already removed - seems like using compressed air without care could cause an eye watering moment.Yell

You should be able to get the rear pistons out by just using the adjuster screw to full extend it then wiggle it out, no?
