I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:
My Eunos has still its original cherry red leather seats but needs to have new /reupholstering leather as the bottom part has a split on the leather + foam.
I contacted Seats Surgeons as recommended by one of MX5OC members I met at NEC show in November.
I just got a reply from SS saying they don’t offer anymore re trim of MK1 seats because the original foam deteriorates over time and also can’t put new foam.
I desperately want to get the seats sorted as that’s the only part that lets my lovely car down. Happy to travel to get a nice job done on those seats - but ideally not more than 3 hrs drive from London.
Any recommendations on where I can get it to sort out the foam + do a nice job with the leather re trim?
Strange that SS won’t replace the foam (or aren’t prepared to!)
You could get in touch with Dave the Trimmer and have a chat through, see what he thinks your options are. He’s just outside Bedford, so not a million miles away from you. I’ve seen some of his work ‘in the flesh’ and it’s excellent.
The original Mazda foam is essentially moulded with wire springs inside. Its not just a bit of shaped foam. The R2-Limited is a phase 2 Eunos Roadster, and so shares seating with late model US cars, and not used in other markets. Superfically, the bases are the same as post-1994 Europeam seat bases used on late Mk1s and pre-2000 NBs, The seat back is basically the same as used on Japan and US market early NB.
Good news; Newton Trimming does a trim kit suitable for your shape of seat. For an additional charge they can retrim, and repair the foam:
The Matador Red leather sounds like the same colour as Matador Red vinyl trim from martrim. I used this to recover S-Limited door cards. It was an exact match to factory.
Thanks J! I didn’t know Motorsport had the replacement foams. That would solve 1/2 of the problem. I’ve emailed them to ask if they do the backrest foams too (might as well change them both if possible).
Yes, I saw the Prestige ones in the past when I was researching where to get them re-trimmed. The 50% discount is very (VERY!) tempting But the problem with getting them from them is I would need to pay someone to fit them (and London is crazy expensive). I can do some DIY but I know the seats are quite of a hard task to do on your own
If they could have done fitting too I would definitely go with it. That’s also what made me choose Seat Surgeons - they would fit the covers the same day. So bummed they don’t want to get near a Mk1 anymore. Ageist discrimination
The ILM cushions are the wrong shape for R2-Limited seats. Those cushions are actually for 89-94 cars. Newton Commercial are the only company I have come across doing the correct shaped seat covers for 1995-1997 Eunos roadsters. They do the correct red leather for the R2 Limited. They do seat foam repair. They also do a seat trimming service. They are based in Suffolk, just north of Ipswich.
1996 Miata seat foam, ie identical to the R2 Limited foam
You might as well look for a pair of cheap cloth seats, for £100 or less, send them off for retrim, if you are happy to have the wrong shape seats in the car.
Thanks @ast ! Yes, my seats are exactly as those you showed for the R2. The top down pic looks exactly like my car So basically no point getting the ILM foam replacement.
If I got it right Newton Commercial is the place to go to get the right seat covers + foam repair for my R2, right? On their website they show fitting + foam repair instructions but no mention of them actually doing it at their location. Will email them to check.
In an ideal world I would have liked to replace the foam with new one so to make the seats last for 20 more years. And also get the embroiled Roadster like in my original seats but I guess not an option for redoing a R2 seat.
