I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _
undersealant work_
Hello
I am looking for recommendations for a good garage to undertake rust treatment to the underside of my mark 3. It’s looking a bit rusty under there. I live in Hull but willing to travel to other parts of Yorkshire. Thank you.
None of the people I know of, are located anywhere near Yorkshire
Mx5 restorer SE. I have used them and are pretty good in what they do.
never used them but I know of them
Arnard is located north London, he will strip the car off all undersealing and redo it as opposed to all other companies and comes with high recommendations from all his customers.
Anand and others will tell you that its not the visual rust that you have to worry about. Its the internal cavities - esp the front of the rear arches.
I did mine myself and it’s not fun.
Theres a guy Driffield way who does MX5s on facebook under the very clever name of The AutoBarn Foston Lane, Beeford, Driffield,
07455 398914
Many will spray and say all is well and take your monies regardless
Hello chap. I’m in Barrow upon Humber just over the bridge. I had my MK3.75 done at Jr Classics near Doncaster. Not cheap, circa £700 but they do a proper job. It’s all they do. Takes 3 days and you get free annual checks.
I now have an Abarth 124 Spider and I’ll be taking it there.
I can recommend JR Classics at Askern, Doncaster. He will need the car for a few days but you can get home by bus and train from Doncaster. In addition to rust proofing he also does welding and repainting. However he has a waiting list of a few months.
I booked mine in there 2 months ago, for February 2023!!
He’s absolutely snowed under with vehicles he had to move during lock down.
He will fit me in sooner if anyone cancels…
Thank you for the recommendations. I drove out to try to find the chap in Beeford but couldn’t find the garage, so I have completed a booking form for JR Classics. It would be a shame if I have to wait until after the winter, but I want to use a good garage. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait.
Another satisfied JR Classics customer here. Their Dinitrol treatment of my ND was neither cheap (£800 ) nor quick (3 days ) but it was very, very thorough . Good people, pleasant to deal with and highly recommended .
There is far more to this than a quick slap on of underseal, there is a major pre process well before you even get to that stage with stripping ,de-rusting , treating etc etc, i would hope that any one worth their salt in this field knows these roadsters and where to look at the prone areas as a major concern first, with an endoscope also in this process as a pre inspection, as it is not just the outside that needs addressing ,it is also the box section wit cavity wax.
But all this is pointless if it is all applied onto the flaky rust in and out as it cures nothing, pictures of the whole process are needed regardless and as much stripped away as possible to help with managing the protection, applying over heat shields and plastic does nothing .
It is a must that you take these to someone who knows these roadsters, i cannot believe just how many undersealing business cut corners and just apply goo over everything with out making good correctly and to badly rusted cars thats kind of hidden to the untrained eyes which is a waste of time and you cash.
I have turned many away that needed welding correct first , not MOT patch welds, thats just as bad as rust, only to find that they took them somewhere else to be blasted with goo for a fist full of dollars.
But even when the process is all done correct, what the undersealing /protection places won’t say is we give you a guarantee that they have forever stopped any rust attacking you pride and joy , because they cannot do because it won’t , undersealing/cavity wax is not the ultimate cure to stopping rust regardless of the sales pitch, its about “managing it” and staying on top of it , like the paint work with stone chips or scratches, so it needs to be inspected every 12 months and re-treat the infected area if any and make good again and cavity wax re applied every 3 years or so
It is also down to the products they use and the process they do, as i say pics are needed.
There is a lot of Co’s waiting for owners like yourself relaying on them having a passion to grab your cash, just be mind full where you go and use.
I just see so many people getting ripped off with this, it grinds.
M-m
Don’t know whether you’ve managed to find somewhere already, but a personal recommendation would be JR Classics (01302 709612) in Askern. From memory they offer a 5 yr warranty if you maintain an annual check-up.
Hi Maya, i recently had a super rust job done on my mk3 by Steve Garbutt. His garage is on A161, just south of Goole, at Ealand. Great work by an MX5 master.
Contact steve on 01302 726763, or 07508 805924. Or e mail steve@mx5motors.com. I never met anybody who understands MX5 corrosion problem like Steve and his price was very reasonable
Rochdale Rustproofing Duke St garage, Shaw, near Rochdale… 3 day job using Dinitrol, all cavities done, photos sent to you. £800+vat (but if you can pay cash…) free annual check ups, while you wait and go in the pit with him under your car… AND price includes a courtesy car so your journey is not an issue.
Just to reiterate what Mazda Mender says above - the oldest NA is 33 years old the youngest NB is 18 years old and the NC - what 8 years for the youngest.
The NA and B are full on classics and the C isn’t far behind. Owners need to bite the bullet at some point and understand that the running gear is tough but monocoques, subframe and suspension are champion rusters - more so that my other classic - an Alfasud!
There is no substitute for getting under it yourself on a set of ramps or very securely on axle stands and stripping, inspecting and rust proofing regularly. Even reputable specialists are businesses and do what they’re asked to do. They are not writing blank checks for whatever needs to be done to make it good. And if you haven’t looked at what needs doing to an MX5 how do you know what to ask for?. I don’t trust ANYONE ahead of my own eyes, scraper and heat gun and a borescope.
I’ve said it many times before my MX5 was given a clean mot by a tester about a week before I bought a borescope and looked down the sills and the amount ive spent on welding would cripple some folks. My good fortune or misfortune is I can afford the hit.
The underside of my car (1996/7 1.8is) is mostly new now but to keep it as close to that as I can I am under it every three months for checkup.
Couldnt agree more Andrew…heat gun…scraper and a borescope…and a tough pair welding or leather gloves, eye wear, mask, head cover and tough overalls as melting dripping underseal is like napalm on your skin.
Know your own car and you know what really needs to be done.
Nothing more satisfying in my opinion than working on and knowing intimately your car.
Whatever floats your boat - but it sounds like a scene from Dickens . There are few things I’d rather do less than endure trial by dripping underseal and I will confess to being a stranger to a borescope . My bad I guess
Now then John, what is all this trendy speak (‘my bad’).
Most unlike you and I must confess to thinking that you have let the side down quite badly.
The next thing you know you will be using words like ‘rotors, trunk and hood’!!!
