- My model of MX-5 is: 2018 RF 160
- I’m based near: __Coventry
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Spare wheel
Hi , I have just bought a 2018 160 Rf with 17 inch alloys which only comes with a repair kit . Can anyone recomment a suitable space saver spare to take on long journeys >
Is the boot on the RF big enough to take a spare wheel? (Thinking space saver). If so then you will need somewhere to stow the punctured wheel to get it home or to a tyre centre. Here is a test, take a wheel off your car, let the air out of it and see if there is any where on your car that you can carry it in!
On the NC it is just possible to get a space saver in the boot and I’m told a 16” wheel with little tread. Mines got 17” wheels so I carry a ratchet strap to put around the flat tyre to hope fully crush it enough to fit in the boot but if I’m carrying luggage, then that will cause a problem.
Richard.
A temporary spare from an NA or NB will fit the hub, don’t know if it’ll clear the brakes though or fit in the boot though. I reckon you could pick one up cheap enough to try it, I’d be interested to know the result. I’d be dubious about using it on the rear with the LSD.
Thanks for the replies so far. Has anyone tried any of the spacesavers successfully on this model ?
Hi, I have just bought a 2015 Sport Nav, 2.0L ND soft top, 17 inch wheels, found various space saver spare wheels on Amazon & Ebay or on general google search. My car has 4 stud wheels. The Road Hero Space saver alloy RH008 is listed as fitting my car, also found a steel space saver. You need to check if your car has 4 or 5 stud
wheel, space savers are 15 or 16 inch. Prices vary from about £120+ for steel and £188-198 for the alloys. Still reviewing what to buy. Check spec and fitting with seller. You usually get a wheel brace and jack kit with the space saver which you will need.
Hi
I have a 2 litre port Nav and have been told several times it is imposs to use a non standard size spare wheel,if you use a space saver on the front that it will not clear the brakes, and you can not use it on the back it will bugger up the L.S.D,and then of coarde there is the question of what do you do with the dirty standard wheel you have just taken off, certainly if boot is full, and if you have a passenger, where do you put it,it will not i think actually fit in the boot anyway, and not sure how you would stand it on the passenger seat,i look forwartd to hearing more info on this subject.
All best Simon
P.S I do like what the salesman told me when buying the car as i was worried at not having spare wheel,he said you just phone the mazda support and they come out with new tyre, [ ok why under warrantry ] i said if i am in the middle of scotland with no phone signal hundreds of miles from civilisation, what then,he said you have a very long walk.
I have 17 inch wheels on my kuro and a bought a space saver from mx5 parts if you deflate the tyre alittle it fits in the boot
I bought a full size matching fifth alloy and tyre for my NC as a spare, kept indoors in its plastic bag, but the car carries only a repair kit, sufficient to get me home to then put on the spare, and then the damaged tyre can be assessed by a professional.
There was a thread on tyre repair kits vs the silly gel, my post below lists the kit, plugs and vulcanising fluid I use, but make your own mind up…
Thank you everyone . I am comming round to the idea that I should follow RichardFX advice and plan limp home after a puncture on the repair kit and buy a spare full size wheel to keep at home to use while getting the puncure repaired .
Unless it’s a sidewall hit…which I’d not wish on anyone.
Thankfully punctures are very, very rare.
