Recon Engine 1.8 MK3

Hi , I’m trying to source a recon 1.8 engine for a 2012 MK 3. I have someone to fit, but struggeling to find reliably sourced engines at reasonable price. Have noted some of the older posts on here about sources to beware of, but wondered if anyone had any recommmendations or could point me in the direction of reliable company’s that supply. MX5city has for £1900, does anyone know of current sources who will supply for less than this? Thanks

Try Paul Roddison, he’s in Sheffield, Tel  0114 244 5300 or 0870 600 8767

Thanks, will give that a a try

You can buy a whole MK3 car for £2300 This one is in Cannock

 "£2,308

Few small blemishes which can’t be seen Fully working soft top roof with no damage Navy blue Bodywork Electric windows Floor mats Radio CD Rear parking sensors"

Probably needs new tyres and discs but otherwise seems alright

You do not say what is wrong with your existing engine,is it not repairable?

Buying 2nd hand you might just purchase more trouble.AK Automotive (build and race MX5’S) do a rebuild, full or part rebuild that is warranted.

Hello Freg

I am not sure of your location, always a good idea to include this.

Do exactly what MickAP advises

If you are trying to cut costs why not do a compression test and if all cylinders are good
have the Crankshaft reground. This has to be a lot cheaper than a recon engine.

the problem is the ‘shells’ will have welded themselves to the crank and ‘spun’ in the rods.

some of the guys above will remember an open evening where I stripped an engine in front of 25 owners club members.

feel free to call me for more info…many thanks to the guys above who recommended us…

Sir,
it would appear to me that the example you quote is a good example of an engine that
has been hammered to the absolute death.I would suggest that neither you nor i would know
the extent of the journal damage without removing the sump.
The club member concerned may have been in touch with you and given a more detailed
account of the whole event and the extent to which he pushed his lame engine,in which case
i withdraw my comments and apologize to yourself.
My intent was to help a fellow club member to cut the cost of the repair to the vehicle
which he seems to be quite attached to.
Regards.

Thanks All for your replies, much appreciated

Hi FREG,
will you please post the eventual outcome of your dilemma.
I would love to know if there is a happy ending.
Kind Regards.
Ian.

A very happy ending would be a 2.5 conversion!  Would love to do this on my car.
