Red colour magic wax polish on Soul Red!?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2018 1.5 SEL Nav
  2. I’m based near: York
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: does red colour magic work on Soul Red metallic paint?

Hi folks my car has the gravel rash from gritty back roads. Touching up stone chips is easy but the fine pin ■■■■■ ones are impossible apart from a re spray! Any one used the red colour magic on a soul red car? I’ve used the black on black and it’s a good mask til eventually washes off and needs reapplying. Just wondered if the red which I imagine is a flat colour would hide the rash for a bit on soul? Thanks

Try a red wax crayon rubbed into the chips. A colour slightly darker than the paint works best.

And when you finish and are happy with the results, give the car an all over with a good polish which will help seal in the colour and help it stay more than a wash or two.

Got told by bodyshop never to use colour polishes can be a pain later if needing paintwork doing to match due to the polish dying the car so slightly. This was years ago thougjh.

A valid point especially with red so I will try the wax crayon :crayon: option. Thanks to all for your replies

These are what I use for smaller touch ups, you can get smaller ends aswell

Use a cocktail stick or my preferred self propelling pencil to apply small dots of paint, (if I am stuck without either option a piece of masking tape folded over onto its self into a point also works)

Then wax (not polish) over the top

Polish is abrasive so just pulls the repair back out,

I wouldn’t have thought coloured polish would be any issue for painting latter on as long as the area was properly prepared

There is no substitute for a proper paint repair but you can get decent results touching in paint

Bodyshops don’t like wax with silicones in it, either, as it prevents paint sticking and can be very hard to remove.

I had always assumed (from a point of total ignorance regarding bodywork and paintwork, admittedly) that the first phase of any professional paint job would involve cleaning the area with a solvent to remove any dirt/grease/polish/silicone/whatever.

Is that incorrect?

Ref colour polish yes they would prepare the damaged area for paint and remove all old polish but obviously the whole car will most likely been polished with the coloured polish .So the blend may still stand out against the repair section
…Like i said this was told to me years ago

It takes a lot of panel wipe to shift silicone waxes. They’re very inert.

I worked at a Toyota main dealer for quite a few years. They had a bodyshop next to the valeting block the rule was no silcone to be used as it could enter the paint shop as it gets in the air then lands on a car waiting paint work. I hate silcone and the shine it gives on dashboards. The only reason it is used on interiors on second hand.cars at dealers is to cover up the dirt and grime. It saves them time and money on a full valet . .
