I’m over 50, well into my 2nd childhood, with a 1999 MX5 1.8i (limited edition) Sport. List of modifications as long as your arm, ready for the odd track day or two, yet for some reason, I was struggling to find road insurance for this car, well, insurance that you didn’t have to take out a mortgage for that is. Read about REIS here on the forums, thought I’d give them a try and whoop whoop, £389 fully comp, with trackday (4) for me and the wife… Unbelivable!!!
footman james bumped my premium up by £210 when i added a supercharger, sports exhaust and eibach springs to my mk-3…in excess of £600 now !!..will probably do at least 2 trackdays this year so will give REIS a chance to beat that…seems like a good deal with trackdays included in premium
I’m glad you got sorted, REIS wouldn’t even quote me as “We are not insuring in that postcode area due to fraudulent claims”. I asked them to check my address as I have lived here for 36 years and she refused to even look into it.
We tried to get a multicar quote from REIS, 2 x MX5 and an Audi A6 2.8 Quattro Avant. They can’t do multicar because none of the cars are worth over £15K. Stipulation is that at least one of the cars must be worth more than £15K. Very odd. So still with Admiral, who once again tried it on. Renewal cost £875 after 45 minutes on phone we are now paying £700.
Well after a year with REIS I awaited my renewal quote half expecting it to go up as most insurance companies tend to do after they think they’ve hooked you in. Fortunately it actually went down a bit. Less than £260 for the year fully comp protected. There is no insurance company that suits everyone but for me it beatss others hands down and is a major contributing factor to me keeping my MX-5
just like to add, i had an incident last month that involved writing off my car they had an engineer out within 2 days and on the 3rd, i had the dredded news of the car being a total loss due to cost of repairs, and the caar was then collected after 3 days and a cheque for the value of £2750 (less the £350 excess) within a week… so from crash to payout, it took about 9 days in total… very impressed.
My wife has just been refused insurance with REIS as her car has a K&N viper fitted and hasn’t had “Experience in a modified car of this type in the last 12 months.” When I tried to explain that the induction system is basically a bling air filter the lady I dealt with became very sarcastic. Adrian Flux, no problem and very courtious. Any non performance enhancing mods. covered and insured like for like.
i used to be with admiral up until a few months ago then i went with acorn insurance. small company but better cover for ya $ with my circumstances. nobody want to go near me with a modded mx5 and 2 sp30 tickets
Yes Haggis, same…that’s why i went with Acorn as they were able to write the policy to suite my circumstances… Imported, modified with points isn’t gonna see you many offers but these guys sorted it…
Trying to work out all this insurance mellarky has me baffled.
Now I’m 58 next year yet Saga came out the dearest, go figure. REIS put my premium up this time around, too much in my estimation. Now they gave me a good deal last year, and very helpful, but needs must. So Aviva came out best this time around for me £216. Next year they’ll probably dearer, or should I say will be dearer as they gave me 12 weeks free insurance as a new customer.
Been meaning to get post about this as I arranged my insurance a couple of weeks ago.
My scenario… - 1.8 FM II, full stainless exhaust, uprated suspension, mohair roof with glass, etc, etc. (all main points declared) - reasonable area but not lowest risk, garaged - one SP30 speeding penatly, three points - one claim for vandalised roof about four years ago, £200 claim - only three years no claims bonus (after previously being on a limited mileage policy on which there was no no claims bonus facility)
My existing insurer, Footman James, wanted £675 (£600 last year) although that was an unlimited mileage policy and included business cover as last year I needed to be covered to take my own car to our other work sites.
Acorn said their minimum premium was £650 (I think) as they specialise in high risk drivers, i.e. high number of points/previous driving convictions, etc.
Adrian Flux gave a good quote of £330 for a 3,000 mile limit but the cover wasn’t as good as REIS (see below). Breakdown was £52 extra.
REIS offered £314 for 3,000 miles, £326 to include trackday cover and £352 to include trackday cover and driving other cars (third party on other cars). Euro breakdown was £110 including recovery from breakdown at track.
Footman James (were my existing insurer)… Although they provide the owners’ club policy, they told me they were not currently offering limited mileage policies, although they would be doing so again at some later undefined date. Hence, they couldn’t get near the above quotes, so I went with REIS at £352 inc. trackdays and driving other cars.
I walk to work normally now, but I still wanted to be covered to bring the car on occasion. The REIS policy does cover Social, Domestic and Pleasure plus commuting to a single permanent place of work. (AFAIK most limited mileage policies include SDP but don’t specifically include commuting.)
I arranged UK breakdown cover for £38 with Autoaid. It covers onward journey, homestart, etc. The only potential hassle is you have to pay up front and claim it back, but I’ve only broken down once in 13 years (split clutch hose) so since I don’t expect to have to use it, that doesn’t seem a big deal.
